Thought it was probably about time I start to organise my favourite reads into a list 🤣🤣 Narrowing it down to just ten books was a *lot* harder than I expected 😱😱 These books are *IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER* because that was just a step too much 🤣🤣 Have you read any of these?

I am delighted to publicly reveal the cover artwork for my upcoming series, MEMORIES OF FIRE! It includes dragons like you've never seen before, meddling gods, flintlock vibes, and an animal companion MEMORIES OF FIRE is an adult epic fantasy quartet, and my most ambitious series yet!

A young man with a pied crow on his shoulder and a glaive on his back walks through the ruins of a battlefield. Blackened swords and arrows litter the ground and ash rains down from above. A god-killing Reaper dragon flies in front of him and stares out at us, flames in its jaws. This is the cover art for the upcoming Memories of Fire - an epic fantasy quartet. Book 1, Faithless Gods, will release at the end of 2026

Dia is written for all those intelligent, mature for their age, quirky little girls who grew up thinking they were broken or needed to be fixed. Whose struggles went unnoticed because they weren’t “difficult,” but they were making themselves smaller, lesser, and never wanted to be a burden.

Background of green dragon scales with the following text in white:

Diandra Khose
Memories of Fire

Diandra Khose has never fit in anywhere. Desperate to tame the wild magic growing within her before she hurts more people, she blunders from bad decision to bad decision in search of somewhere she can call home - and the family of a powerful Arbiter might offer her that chance.

While living on the fringes of Valaisian society, a stranger shows her magic beyond her wildest dreams. Now, Dia must decide whether to clip her own wings to live in peace, or embrace the unknown and surpass any living mage. But, unchecked, her magic could destroy herself and everyone she holds dear.

Now, Blackthorn must train the next generation of dragonriders to fly into a battle that should have remained in legend. But he powerful mages who helped him conquer death have come to collect. Instead of demanding payment, they offer him a new trial - fighting for the very gods he sought to kill.

"4.5⭐️

How often do you find a book that hits that sweet spot where it has all the tropes and world-building elements you like and familiar with? But also offers a new take on those familiar ideas? Comfortable yet exciting?
Let me introduce you to The Iron Crown.

A young man wakes up stuck in a bog, with no recollection of who or where he is. And a dragon spirit facing him.
From then, Fenn (the said young man) begins his journey to regain the lost memories, picking up two unwilling companions on the way.

The writing is fairly easy to get into. Not too flowery or archaic, but it doesn’t fall into overusing modern speech either.
The story starts fast, then settles into a medium-pace around chapter 5.
There are multiple POV, with Fenn’s being the most exciting.

The villain’s portrayal was disappointing at first. He felt a bit…cliche.
BUT! Not to spoil the plot, let’s just say there are expected “bad” characters and unexpected ones. It comes together brilliantly at the end.
And, to be honest, I would ignore almost any flaw just to continue reading about Fenn.

Will I pick up the next book? Most definitely!"

Utterly blown away by this review of The Shadow Gate! 🔥🔥🔥 "Another triumph in classic fantasy story-telling with a modern feel, impressive innovation and a talon-sharp focus on character." "Truly belongs in the top tier domain of fantasy fiction." www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Quote snippet from Goodreads Review for The Shadow Gate by L.L. MacRae, from reviewer Nick P:

"These are all believable people who are doing what they can to achieve their goals and overcome their internal and external obstacles, whether it’s personal trauma, complex familial relationships, mental health, difficult obligations and conflicting duties, or memory loss. This is epic fantasy on a grand scale but lived through the eyes, hearts and minds of people who could be our neighbours in the real world and who face choices and challenges which are rarely black and white."

Quote snippet from Goodreads Review for The Shadow Gate by L.L. MacRae, from reviewer Nick P:

"With enthralling character development and dynamics, breath-snatching action and enough tension, mystery and emotional angst to burn through my supply of midnight candles, The Shadow Gate is an adventure which deserves to be read and shouted about.

It is a superb gateway from the set-up of book 1, ramping up the tension and excitement into what I expect to be a gripping and satisfying pay-off in the final instalment.

The Dragon Spirits series is superb escapism. That, for me, is the heart of what epic fantasy is all about.

The world of Tassar may be out of kilter but these books are a perfect balance of foreboding darkness and hopeful light, pulsating action and deep character study, and high world stakes and hugely personal dilemmas.

The books have as much spirit as the wonderful dragons in their pages and they truly belong in the top tier domain of fantasy fiction."
