But the notion that everybody was prudish in 1976 is just bizarre - and can only have been written by somebody who wasn't there. Sure, the BBC wouldn't broadcast some things, pre-watershed (9pm) - but plenty of taboos had already been broken a decade earlier.

"Comedy Playhouse" and "Play for Today", despite coming from different departments at the Beeb, could both tackle similar issues - but with a different slant. Some of the comedies could be quite dark, and some of the plays were deliberate comedies (c.f. Abigail's Party).

I would take issue with the notion that farting would have been radical for a British TV comedy in 1976. I was 16 when I saw the original broadcast, and there was nothing shocking about that scene. We'd had over a decade of the Benny Hill show, Frankie Howerd, and Carry On films.

The rest of the missing votes were from the previous Conservative vote. This is an important lesson. Tory voters might claim to be against fascism, but they would rather abstain, and let a fascist win, than vote along with what they perceive to be a "left bloc".

Just re-browsed this thread. It certainly touched a nerve (and rightly so). Another crap scheme to add to the mix - the "guided bus" lane. They have them in Bradford. Can only be used by specially adapted buses. If a bus breaks down, they are all stuck. Hence worse than a bus lane.

Running these things on the road is not good. They will get stuck in traffic jams, and car drivers also have an annoying habit of forgetting that trams can't swerve - so there are frequent collisions. Dedicated routes are important - as has been shown in other cities with trams.
