🌍How do global change and land uses affect the capacity of headwater catchments to retain greenhouse gases? #SERVICO2 project, coordinated from CEAB-CSIC, is studying this. This week, its entire team, is at the Centre to coordinate the actions that will be carried out ▶️ servico2.org

How do these temperature anomalies look when normalized to the estimated 2025 climate? Sure, we're warmer than pre-global warming averages, but are we warmer than where we 'should' be by now?

Yes, and we can reasonably wait 1-2 days until samples freeze :/

Hi bubble, Can anyone recommend a US customs broker for handling samples shipped on dry ice (non-commercial)? We're sending RNA to JGI for sequencing and they recommend working with with a brokers so the shipment does not get held up in customs. Any experiences?

I love the origin of this name.. It's such a Newfoundland story where you realize how deep the history of that place goes :)

They're called Lakka in southern Finland (and apparently Hilla in the north). It's probably the most popular jam here, especially with Leipäjuustoa (bread cheese or Finnish squeaky cheese: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_c...). It's delicious.

Local lore is that "The origin of the common name bakeapple has long been reported in NL to be an anglicized version of the French phrase "baie qu'appelle?", which translates as "What is this berry called?"" Source: newfoundland-labradorflora.ca/flora/dview/...

Naja, Wahlverhalten und approval sind aber jetzt schon zwei unterschiedliche Sachen die nicht so eins-zu-eins vergleichbar sind. Sonntagsfrage (also, eigentlich Dienstagsfrage) Daten gibt's keine, oder?

If that's true, how does one achieve a left-of-center majority? Also, doesn't that contradict the history of SD voters to far right parties? I'm not for wooing far right voters, but this seems somewhat defeatist to me ('we will never have a majority sprouting SD ideas')..

Exploring microscale heterogeneity as a driver of biogeochemical transformations and gas transport in peat
Abstract. Peat pore network architecture is a key determinant of water retention and gas transport properties and has therefore been hypothesized to control redox conditions in and greenhouse gas emis...

Maybe we should just program our editorial systems to auto-correct 'native speaker' to 'language expert' in all reviews? (or straight to 'writing is crap'?)
120
Lukas Kohl @lko.bsky.social · 06/03/2025
Pretty much. I think this typically comes from a non-native reviewer, and in their local context this might be the nicer thing to say.
110
Lukas Kohl @lko.bsky.social · 06/03/2025
That's all they had to say? That's some seriously bad / old-fashioned sci writing advice even before they take about native speakers..

⚒️ An extremely important thread from @holdingupthesky.bsky.social. To her questions I’d add: - What does the leadership at AGU see as its primary mission? - How, if at all, does leaping into precompliance; and, at best, burying references to diversity and equity work, support that mission?

Extremely important thread on the @agu.org leaderships' failure to be transparent in its sudden removal of Diversity related content from its website. I personally have lost confidence in executive leadership, in the week following this "comply in advance". They sold us out. They need to resign IMO

Coming back to AGU, does anyone know when and by who the decisions for future meeting locations are made? Sure, AGU locations seem to be locked in until 2028, but that just means it's tine to start campaign to move meetings after that year.

Times New Roman (what else :p ) IIRC fonts with serifs like TNR are easier to read/follow in a wall of text, like in a proposal.

Talking about strange funding arrangements, here in Finland, our main funding agency (Research council of Finland) expects universities to pay 30% of all project costs. There's no money for that. Universities therefore all good 69-108% overhead (payable only for salary costs here) to cover their 30%

We are alarmed by the Administration’s actions to freeze science funding and eliminate DEI efforts and climate change initiatives, which go against AGU’s mission and harms our members. We must unite to address these changes, beginning by hearing from you. Read more: buff.ly/4hm8r4e

So, he does not trust that clim sci Fi honest, unbiased research. Does he say why? Does he think that we getting something out of our biasing our work (like, need to catastrophize research results to get more grants)? Are we so steeped in our ideology that we do not look at things objectively?

Lukas Kohl @lko.bsky.social · 19/01/2025
This does sound horribly frustrating.

Lukas Kohl @lko.bsky.social · 19/01/2025
Where does this lack of trust come from? How have we (as say the scientific community) contributes to it? (Like, when we see sci comm as a one way thing that downloads or findings into people's brains but does not explore what we can learn from them..)

I'm thinking about how much effort people put in finding 'facts' they believe in (think about all the alternative covid treatments people explored) while being unable to believe the easily available answers provided by trustworthy sources..

Not sure if my thoughts on this are useful here - they're mostly inward looking, self examining, work in progress. I'm exploring the privileged position scientists have long had in society (defining what's true) and how we deal with losing this position.
