if the US government logs these trees at the rate / quantity they're proposing, we'll lose one of the last old-growth forests. there's no coming back from that. if you have five minutes to leave a comment pushing back against the BLM, please do; there's a guide to that below.

March rent is past due, and thousands of Minnesota families can't leave their homes to earn it. @ziibiing.com and an entirely volunteer team built standwithminnesota.com from the ground up. No org. No funding. No bureaucracy, and no delay. Just people who saw a crisis and started moving. 🧵

Was searching online for an eggy crepes recipe, and I can't say I'm disappointed for this being at the top of my results. As a grown up "syrup on everything" kid, I can get behind this recipe

Might not be the best decision in the sense that anyone could pick up the handle and impersonate him. But for regular people who don't have to keep up a public image, I fully agree.

Ideally, turn off your phone completely before attending political activities or crossing the border. That usually encrypts your device which makes it more difficult to read the data on disk. Not always a perfect solution but a better one. www.infosecinstitute.com/resources/op...

Really awesome article about AI and education. I love the discussion around decoupling the feeling of learning vs actually learning, and how discomfort is often required for learning but understandably avoided when given the opportunity with AI.

More like make friends with your local farmers and make sure you can trust their honesty and cleanliness long term. Shorten that supply chain, because you can't live until old age from one panic buy in your freezer

I take the stance that boycotting is only for those who can. I have elderly family out in the country that realistically need a service like Amazon to save them aching bodies, money, and time. If you believe avoiding Target will harm your community, I hold no grudge 🤷

What bothers me is all the science around vaccines is free on the Internet. You can find it explained hundreds of different ways, down to the biochemistry happening in your body, and yet some choose fear over knowledge.

Right, I was calling back to the original post and lamenting how even if they are worth the cost, many families will not be able to pay the price. With a quick Google, I can't find any kids clothes besides pajamas that are made from American grown fabric...

Liz @lizzythenerd.bsky.social · 06/04/2025
It's worth it if you can afford it. I can't imagine trying to clothe a whole family with that price point. That's like $1000 for a week's worth of outfits, that will need to be replaced at least once a year for growing kids.

Soylent is mostly just a soy protein shake with added vitamins and minerals. Most of the flavors have a pretty similar "beige" taste, but I like the chocolate mint. They also have caffeine versions which work really well for breakfasts. 40g protein is hard to beat for sure!

I still order Soylent from time to time 👀 Their marketing on college campuses really worked on me, and life doesn't always give me enough time to make a proper meal. I am curious about Huel Hot and Savory meals, I've heard the recipes are hit and miss.

Day Owl makes really high quality sustainable backpacks. For a while they even tried to take in old bags of any brand, repair them, and then resell to reduce waste. They don't give the vibe of a Trump supporter imo. Seriously if you're in the market for a good commuter backpack I highly recommend

Maybe I didn't find this groundbreaking because I already feel the weight of masking as influencing so many of my unhelpful mental traits 😅 I think I also assumed that most people mask (sometimes categorized as code switching etc) and felt it the same way I do.

I have heard it helped many and I'm thankful it has! It was just the top recommended book and I was disappointed that it made me feel more alienated than accepted

My disclaimer is that I listened to the audiobook which is spoken by the author (maybe my anxiety interprets their flat affect as more hostile than intended?), and that I only got to halfway through chapter 5.

It feels to me like it's focusing too much on autistic folks being victims of society and has an attitude of blame when there is no one group to blame, there is no single fix, "unmasking" is not something you can just choose to do one day and instantly be accepted.

Liz @lizzythenerd.bsky.social · 30/03/2025
Who are these evil neurotypicals trying to harm disabled folks? I believe it's more of a lack of understanding and sometimes lack of empathy. I think the author is conflating non-autistic people with societal standards which are nebulous and upheld or broken by many groups, even autistics sometimes

One excerpt from the intro: "Almost every person with a mental illness or disability has been crushed under the weight of neurotypical expectations, and has repeatedly tried and failed to earn acceptance by playing the rules of a game that was designed to harm us."

Example here, I got coordination in 3 clicks but that's not the same as "coordinated" 🥲
Screenshot of the game referenced. There is a mind map starting with the term "merger". The goal is to find the word "coordinated". I clicked on the terms "joint venture", then "cooperation", then "collaboration" and the word "coordination" appeared. However that is not close enough to the goal word of "coordinated".

I tried (and failed) to get Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi to explain his new game, to a T, to me. instead, I had one of the most fun, baffling interviews I've ever done www.wired.com/story/katama...
It’s a game about a teenager who’s stuck as a T-pose and trying to figure out where the T-pose is coming from. It’s a game about—umm. [Long pause] Do I need to explain? [Another long pause] No. [Laughs]

That’s fair. Who is this character? How would you describe them?

A teenager, 13-years-old, female or male, whatever I mean, I don’t care—stuck in a T-pose, for some reason.

What makes T the perfect pose?

Because it’s perfect! You are perfect. I think it’s just perfect.

I think I learned that I like mind maps so much I could poke through infinitely without hitting the goal word and be happy. However it does bother me when I hit the right word but in a different form. So "build" is not "builders" is not "building" and I might need to backtrack to get the right form

Was there any particular takeaways that you really enjoyed from the book that maybe I missed?

Liz @lizzythenerd.bsky.social · 29/03/2025
I actually didn't like what I read from this book 🫣 I felt like it pitted autistic and allistic against each other, and didn't give me anything new in my own research about autism that I couldn't find through Google. But maybe that's just me.

Stone countertops can't (shouldn't?) be painted over to change the color scheme of the room, so it's probably a safe item to get in grey. Walls and accessories are best for pops of color imo.

If he started on Feb 3rd (from what I can research), he is legally required to "step down" by June 13th. It's also possible he's stepping down now, to leave eligible days to pick it back up later in the year. It's fun to think he is somehow giving up, but that's an assumption so far.

On the other site, Studio Ghibli-style AI output is going viral and allow me to just say it is profoundly depressing to see that stuff being used to promote OpenAI's latest product. Miyazaki famously called AI-produced art "an insult to life itself"—and this in turn is an insult to him.

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs. However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!
An infographic. There are six panels.

1. "Slow internet. Alt text is shown in place of unloaded images." a drawing shows a phone with poor signal, and alt text is visible where the image should have loaded.

2. "Findabillity. Alt text helps to search content." A drawing shows someone searching 'dog with banana' and a post is shown underneath without the words 'dog' or 'banana'. It is implied to be part of the alt text.

3. "Screen readers. Alt is read out to people using text-to-speech software". There is a drawing of the output a screen-reader would show when viewing an image with alt text on bluesky.

4. "Translation. Alt text can be translated". A drawing shows a post being translated. The alt text is also translated into german.

5. "Readability. Text in images can be made legible" There is a drawing of some truly awful handwriting inside a speech bubble. The alt text clarifies what the text is supposed to say.

6. "Disambiguation. Description helps clarify intent." There is a drawing of a post with a picture of a creature. This is styled after the famous optical illusion of a rabbit and a duck. The alt text clarifies that the animal is a rabbit. It definitely looks more like a duck.
