ALIGNMENT FUN FACT: in 2017, when I was fresh off my own personal rock bottom, the Unicorn Frappuccino came out at Starbucks. That was the day that Jack B. Nimble, enchanter-turned-barista, was born. We ate our sandwiches in silence, and I let my imagination have its head between sips of barely-cool Dr. Pepper. If I subtracted everything that had happened since we met—and ignored what had happened with Rowan in the alley—I could almost pretend we were on a date. The math was simple—sandwiches outdoors after dark with a hot guy? We were basically having a moonlit picnic, mausoleum or not.

Of course, once I had let my imagination out to play, it didn’t want to stop. Sitting so close to Cyrus, I could smell the faintest hint of my own soap on his skin, mellowed out by time into something warm and mysterious that I suspected was a clue as to what kissing that marble-pale skin might taste like. With the necromancer close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off his body, I couldn’t help remembering how he’d held me tight against him, and how his large hand had been hot and firm over my mouth, keeping me quiet in the shadows. I couldn’t appreciate it at the time, too busy enduring the unexpected agony of watching Rowan walk away to protect us—to protect me—but I did now. My mind immediately jumped to what it might be like to have Cyrus hold me like that again, his strong body like a shield over mine as his gentle hands—
This is bad, I told myself, wiping my hands on the parts of my jeans that weren’t covered in dust. I needed to focus. This was not the time to realize I was falling for—
