Looking for the common ground, there is alway something; for me and slugs it is that we both want to eat the cabbages I grow. Political but not party political. British & European. Brexit was a mistake. I'm too old to bother with age verification.

The correct version of the Brexit regulatory story is that the leave advocates thought only Brussels regulated and then discovered that not only wasn't true, but that business actually wanted things like data adequacy and alignment with their largest markets

Saying 95% of businesses do no trade what-so-ever internationally appears to imply they'd be freed up by removal of international standards & regulations, but if they're part of a supply chain to a business trading overseas then won't they still have to meet the standards or lose domestic custom?

This intensely stupid right wing idea is an extension of Brexit ignorance and prejudice. It represents the failure of our politics and our media to act in our best interests and to inform voters properly. Brexit is more than enough idiocy. Leaving the ECHR shouldn’t even be on the radar.

As long as the Tories are threatening to leave the ECHR, they aren’t a serious party. Consider it the ultimate red flag. Any party who’d take this entirely unnecessary and ruinous risk with our rights and our country’s security and wellbeing should never get its hands on power. (Letter, Times)
Value of the
ECHR
Sir, In dangerous times, serious countries do not retreat into splendid isolation. They build alliances, multiply their influence and strengthen institutions. Key among those is the 46-member Council of Europe, at its heart the European Convention on Human Rights. As former independent reviewers of terrorism legislation we have seen at close quarters that the ECHR is not just a human rights instrument. It is a national security asset. Terrorist networks, hostile states, organised crime gangs and people smugglers do not respect borders. Tackling them requires arrangements for the closest possible co-operation with our neighbours, including through joint investigations and police access to European passenger, fingerprint, DNA and vehicle data. These arrangements expressly depend on internationally agreed human rights standards, applied by a supranational court. We detect no political willingness to excuse the UK from compliance with standards to which the rest of Europe already subscribes. As authoritarian powers grow more aggressive and democratic institutions face mounting pressure, Britain should not be abandoning one of its greatest postwar achievements.
The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the ECHR. It is whether, in an increasingly perilous world, we can afford not to.

WASPI campaigners probably had little control over their pensions. Treated as appendages to their husbands for years, paid lower wages & less able to make provisions for themselves. People who did get into jobs with DB schemes which survived all the culls are likely to be fine. But many aren't.

When I started work defined benefit pensions were mainly for people in higher positions or professional jobs. Most people paid into state schemes & women in particular were very disadvantaged. Not much, if any, choice. Later some with DB schemes were caught up in miss selling of pension investments.

I think he was following your logic. Also why do you assume pensioners don't know how it is funded. Mostly they knew they were funding their parents/grandparents pensions when they were in paid work & accepted it, knowing it would be them receiving the same benefit later.

Visit some voluntary organisations, investigate unpaid carers (no care allowance for pension age people), see grandparents childminding to facilitate younger family members getting a paid job. Hard working doesn't just include paid work. People don't just become idle when they retire from paid work.

But Gulvinder's article is spot on. Other than immigration which is a distraction stirred up by misinformation, the other priorities, which arise from real problems affecting real lives, are in conflict & can't be resolved while the Brexit damage continues to erode the economy.
110
Elizabeth Baker @lizzieab.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
But you're correct about priorities & voting in a General Election is about a whole range of issues and there are a lot of things that need addressing which rejoining the EU will not solve. I don't think it it would be healthy for UK to just see rejoining as climbing into an economic life raft.

Elizabeth Baker @lizzieab.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
No. I understand why people with similar views to me don't do what I did. For pro-EU people in England Labour was a better option than Tory so depending on where you live & the likely split of votes in the constituency, tactical vote to stop Tories in 2019 was Lab or Lib Dem, in a few seats Green.

Elizabeth Baker @lizzieab.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I did change my vote to vote for a pro-EU party & I have campaigned tirelessly to promote the EU & common purpose with Europe but getting a decent voting system & fighting off the far right, fascism & racism which is ruining lives is higher priority. It should also be a priority right across Europe.
