Please read my comments to this. The NERVE to call those of us with peer reviewed empirical work as conspiracy theorists and not those doing seances for the AGI god (e.g. Hinton's students). But I have more things to say in the comments.

you almost have to admire the effective altruists for coming right out and saying “we feel a keen debt to the criminal who stole the money that provided seed funding for Manifund, which is why we’re hiring her and paying her with some of it instead of returning it to FTX creditors”

Welp can't get the problem to reproduce again. But at least I have a reproducer that will tell me if a given boot was bad, within 20 min of booting the machine. And I'll go separately look for ECC UDIMMs, but at a much more leisurely pace.

I can’t imagine any off the record remarks were removed from the audio recording before it was shared—including before it was potentially uploaded into an AI service.

After I posted this thread, I got an email from an editor indicating the story had been updated. They removed my quote and added new text about the developments in the case. I don't know if they ever would have done that without pressure, but it's something.

Once I found out about it, I contacted the reporter and asked him to retract the piece--or at minimum add an editor's note acknowledging the NYT reporting about how Jane Doe did NOT tell police that she consented to her rape. Thus far, the publication has refused to do so.

Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

I would have thought that that if I didn't have enough PSU, that the GPU would complain first, but it did not! (but now I have a good 750W PSU)

Liz Fong-Jones (方禮真) @lizthegrey.com · 11h
oh yeah, it turns out that past-me set me up for trouble by having a 450W instead of 750W PSU in my sff case :( :( and that manifested in the form of my M.2 NVMe drives spontaneously powering down and disconnecting from the bus, after years of trouble-free operation! so this could be related!

Spooky October mystery! The leading suspicion now is that bad boot-time DRAM training/negotiation was responsible for this, and that rebooting and clearing secure boot to load memtest86+ cleared the bad training because the BIOS resets settings when you change anything.

yeah, but if the problem is at multiple different offsets and always the same data line, the problem isn't avoidable with specific segments

Yep, ran the fuzzer pinned to cpu cores, 3 separate cpu cores saw flips, all the same position/pattern, that's definitely the RAM, not a bad single core.

but if memtest86+ says it's bad and reseating the RAM in case it's a loose connection doesn't work... I'm getting ECC RAM, I don't want this bullshit happening again, too much depends upon being able to trust that the bits I read/write come back the way I intended.

"The all-core baseline shows 3 flips in 15.7 minutes, all on the same bit position (bit 5, byte 7) across different offsets, pointing to a marginal data line rather than a stuck DRAM cell; this means 30 clean minutes in your BIOS test would confirm the fix with very high confidence" memtest86+ time

eventually we got it to reproduce in one in 30 runs rather than one in a hundred runs, with a printout of differing bytes, and it was a single bit flip. on each failure. at the same position within the word. welp, I have bad RAM. I'm not sure if I can afford new RAM :( :(

ruh roh. while release testing and fuzzing a release of one of the libraries I maintain, I saw failed roundtrip checksums :( :( I started panicking thinking we'd have to retract one or several releases for a corruption bug. but it didn't repro on EC2. so the mystery deepened...

Michael Tracey claims he took his post down out of principle, and that it wasn't a "retraction." But it should be. He ran with information from a junk website without looking into it. If he worked at a publication with any sort of standards, this unforced error would be a fireable offense.

Michael Tracey published what he said was the ID of the "Jane Doe" in the Cornell case. Then he took it down, claiming he just wanted to make a point and didn't want to see harm to the person he named. What he hasn't admitted is that he mistook info on a sketchy site for official NY court records.
An archived copy of Michael Tracey's original Substack post includes a screenshot from "eCourt Records" and the commentary: "It's [name redacted]. Don't blame me -- the New York Court System just posted it. Seemingly inadvertently. Oh well."Screenshot of Michael Tracey's post on Substack titled "Note on Jane Doe." It reads: "After identifying Jane Doe earlier tonight, I have now removed the information I published. Why? Because the principle has been served: to underscore that permanently anonymizing litigants who make sensational, spectacular, reputation-destroying claims about others — so long as they can self-declare some form of victimization — cannot be countenanced.

It’s destructive, and an egregious abuse of the legal system by huckster plaintiff’s lawyers. This practice has to end. Lawyers who seek to monetize this sleazy tactic should have to think A LOT HARDER about the claims they’re willing to throw out into the public domain, using impressionable clients who may not even know what they’re getting themselves into.

So why have I now removed her information?

Because I don’t believe she’s the main “villain” here. I primarily blame the bottom-feeding, media-manipulating, sleazebag lawyers who’ve made a whole cash-grab industry out of this racket.

Thomas Giuffra in particular has a lot to answer for. He’s the central reason for the current debacle.

Given the intense nationwide and global interest in this case, I don’t want to bring any further negative attention to this woman. I don’t believe she ought to be punished or subjected to any retribution or humiliation. I believe a RATIONAL solution is necessary here. Not more character assassination — of her, the seven young men, or anyone else. Truly, that is my genuine view."

Banning trans people from appropriate bathrooms in Canada is not legal. This has been the case for over 2 decades at this point. The PEI Human Rights Commission even directly addresses this in this document on their website. www.peihumanrights.ca/sites/www.pe...
Everyone Should Know
Every person has the right to be called by their
chosen name and pronoun.
Every person has the right to use washrooms,
change rooms, and other sex-segregated
services and facilities that reflect their gender
identity. Having gender inclusive facilities is a
positive step, but a trans person should not be
required to use a separate facility or be
segregated.
