Finally got back to to my sketchbook this evening after months of feeling too busy. 🙃Here’s a quick acrylic grayscale painting that felt right to pair with Charles Bukowski’s “air and light and time and space” (full poem in alt text) for this week’s #ImageAndVerse
Charles Bukowski
"air and light and time and space" 1992

'- you know, I've either had a family, a job, something
has always been in the
way
but now
I've sold my house, I've found this
place, a large studio, you should see the space and
the light.
for the first time in my life I'm going to have a place and
the time to
create.'
no baby, if you're going to create
you're going to create whether you work
16 hours a day in a coal mine
or
you're going to create in a small room with 3 children
while you're on
welfare,
you're going to create with part of your mind and your
body blown
away,
you're going to create blind
crippled
demented,
you're going to create with a cat crawling up your
back while
the whole city trembles in earthquakes, bombardment,
flood and fire.
baby, air and light and time and space
have nothing to do with it
and don't create anything
except maybe a longer life to find
new excuses
for

9/6: Closing out summer with some Mary Oliver energy for today’s #ImageAndVerse (“In Blackwater Woods” in alt text) #Stunday #SelfPortraitSunday #eck
“In Blackwater Woods”
Mary Oliver, 1983.

Look, the trees
are turning
their own bodies
into pillars

of light,
are giving off the rich
fragrance of cinnamon
and fulfillment,

the long tapers
of cattails
are bursting and floating away over
the blue shoulders

of the ponds,
and every pond,
no matter what its
name is, is

nameless now.
Every year
everything
I have ever learned

in my lifetime
leads back to this: the fires
and the black river of loss
whose other side

is salvation,
whose meaning
none of us will ever know.
To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

This artwork, "Fireworks, Nagaoka," was created in 1950 by Japanese artist Kiyoshi Yamashita. Happy 250th.
The festival was established in 1946 to console the souls of the 1,500 residents who lost their lives during World War II air raids. Yamashita famously reflected on this event, noting that if people focused on making beautiful fireworks instead of bombs, wars might never happen.

5/3: Getting back to #painting after a busy few weeks, here’s one for this week’s #ImageAndVerse prompt: another #acrylic #sketchbook entry (rambuten for this week’s fruit) to pair with Aimee Nezhukumatathil's poem “from The Rambutan Notebooks” (excerpt in alt text) #EastCoastKin #ArtYear #DailyArt
I won’t ask the rambutan about its messy hair.
I know you are tired of trying to flatten
your hair into something it is not. When
it is meant to flap and fly in the wind-salted air.
Unplug the iron. Let the questions of what is beauty
and what is not-beauty fruit down your back.

Aimee Nezhukumatathil, excerpt from “From The Rambutan Notebooks" 2018
