Sorting through my lead cloth or bale seals, a system used since Medieval times where a two-part, sometimes four-part, stamped & marked lead seal was attached to goods as a means of quality control. A favourite seal is a 19thC one from Riga, Latvia, probably attached to sacks of hemp or flax.
19th century Lead bale seal showing the crest of Latvia, found on the Thames Foreshore, probably attached to a sack of hemp or flax. The reverse of my lead bale seal showing the words Riga (capital of Latvia) and the number 10. This was probably attached to a sack of hemp or flax. An older two part lead cloth seal, showing a crest on one side and the initials WA. This may have come from the Dyers Company. A partial lead cloth seal seen in my hand and showing the initials ORST - which is from the word ‘WORSTED’, that means wool.
