We’d love you to join us for the annual Inclusive Church/SMITF conference on disability and church, which this year (again) focuses on neurodiversity. (I’ll be co-leading a workshop on ADHD, movement and worship.)

Powerful speech from Rev Alice Kemp #synod on how her autism diagnosis helped her 'start being who I am and to stop hiding so much of me. I’ve begun to recognise that I am fearfully and wonderfully made - and it is all of me that God has called into ministry and indeed my whole life' #GeneralSynod

As more voices share a range of responses to the motion at #Synod, largely very positive, people might have questions. There's a great resources page on the Neurodiversity Working Group's website which might help. Scroll down here www.churchofengland.org/resources/ba... /10

ND people are "not problems to be solved but blessings bearing the image of God" (Craddock). Story of objections to a young man with Down Syndrome serving in his church - hopes this motion will change such prejudice so that "no one feels they need to leave part of themselves at the church door." /6

The letter Phil answers is extraordinary. I particularly want to stress, though, that as someone who works in a theological college, I’ve had a number of ordinands who either arrived with a diagnosis of neurodivergence or gained one while with us. The church would be poorer without any of them.

Ahead of today's All Kinds of Minds synod motion, it might be good to share this...
Poster for the "Loving Our Own Minds: Neurodiversity, faith, church & God" conference.

At the top are the St Martin-in-the-Fields 300 and Inclusive Church logos.

The centre features a colourful word cloud in the shape of a brain, with words including "God", "faith", "church", "love", "joy", "gift", "justice", "belonging", "autism", "neurodiversity", and "thinking differently".

Text reads: "Saturday 24 October – Sunday 25 October 2026. A weekend of events to mark our 15th annual conference on disability and church. St Martin-in-the-Fields, London and online. BSL • Captions. Registration opens 31 July. LovingOurOwnMinds.eventbrite.co.uk."

Later today #GeneralSynod debates All Kinds of Minds, a motion calling on the church to affirm the presence of neurodivergent people in the whole life of the church and to reconsider structures and processes which discriminate against and disadvantage neurodivergent people.

SAVE THE DATE This year’s disability conference will be held on 24th and 25th October at St Martin-in-the-Fields and online. We are still fine tuning the details but we can say that this year’s conference will have a neurodiversity focus... Look out for registration later in the summer.

Like the prophet Ezekiel, disabled people can feel overwhelmed by the places we inhabit. Surrounded by bones - by the difficulties of life and by the hostility and injustice of our culture - we can easily lose hope. But God asks us the question, “Can these bones live?”
