FLUOMAN - WHEN REGGAE GLOWED UNDER BLACK LIGHT French artist Fluoman immersed himself in reggae in the 1970s, creating posters, album art, backdrops and 600+ fluorescent paintings. He even painted at Bob Marley’s Tuff Gong studio. Under black light, his paintings reveal an entirely different world

A 45 is never just a record. It is history in your hands. A label. A pressing. A version. A moment in time that somehow survived. And this is only one shelf. That is what makes Roger’s archive so special. It is not just a collection. It is a living map of reggae’s journey

What makes this archive even more extraordinary is that Roger did not just collect the records. He met the artists, interviewed them, and gathered the stories behind the music so he could preserve the full picture beyond the song.

This shelf alone spans roughly 30 years of Jamaican music history, from ska to rocksteady to roots reggae. From Alton Ellis to Bob Marley, and from beloved classics to super rare treasures like Haile Selassie Is the Chapel, these records tell the story of a culture, a sound, and an era.

THE STORY BEHIND THE SHELF For vinyl collectors, this is the kind of sight that stops you in your tracks. This is just one of the many 45 rpm shelves inside Roger Steffens’ Reggae Archives. All original pressings, many of them rare, some extremely limited, and many signed by the artists themselves.

That’s one of the things that makes Roger’s archive so extraordinary. So many of the artists, producers and musicians who helped shape reggae history passed through those rooms, leaving behind photographs, recordings, posters, memories and pieces of a story that might otherwise have disappeared.

And Sporty was much more than one song. He worked across reggae, dub, funk, disco and electronic music, and became an important figure in Miami’s Caribbean music scene as a musician, producer, songwriter and label owner. King Sporty passed away in 2015.

The song was never released during Bob’s lifetime. It finally came out in 1983 on Confrontation, two years after his death, and became one of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ most recognizable songs around the world. King Sporty’s role in that story is much less known.

In 1978, near the end of the Kaya tour, Bob was resting in Miami when Sporty played him the musical foundation he had been working on. Bob responded to it, developed the lyrics and vocal melody, and “Buffalo Soldier” began to take shape.

Not everyone knows that the man standing next to Bob Marley in this photo helped create one of Bob’s most famous songs. His name was Noel George Williams, better known as King Sporty. The song? “Buffalo Soldier.”

Less than three months after Bob Marley’s passing, Reggae Sunsplash ’81 paid tribute to his life and music. During Third World’s set, Stevie Wonder and Rita Marley joined together for a moving performance of Bob’s “Redemption Song.” Photographer Chuck Foster was there to capture the moment.

One of the least-known chapters in Bob Marley's career began with Martha Veléz. She caught Bob's attention after hearing her song "Living Outside the Law" he felt a philosophical kinship with her, and was impressed by her voice. That connection led to three weeks of recording in Jamaica, in 1975
