mourning the 200+ year old grandmother cottonwoods (& countless century old saguaro cacti) killed by US border patrol today in Arizona. All violence is connected, the people who are doing this have hollows where their hearts should be, and my heart is aching for my home
A woman with long wavy hair and an amulet that looks like a drop of blood faces the viewer with cottonwood trees growing out of her shoulders and head. The cottonwood branches drip blood, and she is crying with tears that also resemble blood. She looks angry.

The 'grandmother' cottonwood trees bulldozed for the border wall
Armed Border Patrol agents raided a protest camp in Lochiel, in southeast Arizona, making way for contractors to cut down the last standing cottonwood tree Monday morning for a double border wall, after protesters protected it for more than 70 days. Activists in Lochiel said at least 10 people had been arrested as of 8 a.m. during the ongoing raid. Border Patrol agents ignored demands for a warrant as they entered the private property and destroyed tents, according to news releases from activist groups on the ground. Dubbed the “grandmother tree,” the cottonwood cut down Monday was hundreds of years old. It was one of several that lined the edge of private property along Border Road, a dirt road that runs along the U.S.-Mexico border, in a remote area of Arizona in the San Rafael Valley about 25 miles east of Nogales. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Monday in a statement to Arizona Luminaria that it has now removed all four cottonwood trees on federal land in Lochiel that were marked for removal. “CBP recognizes the importance of protecting the environment, wildlife, and cultural resources during border wall construction,” the statement said. “While concerns exist about impacts to sensitive...

Trees, borders and coalition building
A group of protestors in the small border town of Lochiel, Arizona, in the United States, are fighting to save a 200-year-old cottonwood tree by stopping government contractors from building the border wall. One of these activists has lived in the tree continuously for over a month, preventing construction workers from cutting down the tree. An intergenerational group, led primarily by women, queer, and femme people, are using direct action to halt border wall construction and protect the grandmother tree–what activists describe as a tree “sit-in.” Encampment The person camping in the tree lives on a platform in the upper branches of an ancient tree that locals refer to as 'grandmother'. These activists in the supporting encampment adjacent to the tree use pulleys to bring the person in the tree food and water. I drove four hours from Tucson, Arizona to San Rafael Valley and through Coronado National Forest to camp alongside these activists on remote private land adjacent to the border in support of the tree sit-in. The encampment was established with the permission of the local land owner. On July 27, the construction workers cut down three of the cottonwood trees. I learned that one of these trees...
