Continuing Our Series #LittleRebelsAwardHighlights2026 A picture book which “bravely explores family breakdown & implied domestic violence through a child’s voice”. We may be on hiatus but we’re still here to share the best of 2025’s social justice books. Next Up: OUR DANCE #KidLitUK #BookSky
Visual asset.
Orange background.
Book cover.
At top:
“OUR DANCE
Circle Yuen
Graffeg”
Top right corner the pale yellow Little Rebels logo with “highlights” underneath. Orange background.
Repeat of award logo/highlights bottom left corner.
Text reads:

“A picture book which bravely and deftly explores family breakdown and implied domestic violence through a young child’s eyes. The text perfectly captures a child’s voice while the illustrations expand on the family dynamics, often through the use of the space just beyond the pages. The resolution comes in the form of parental separation and then continued contact through a Child Contact Centre- and this, for us, is where the ‘politics’ of the books are concentrated, showing how contact centre charities play a vital social role by offering traumatised families a secure, neutral space which prioritise children’s emotional and physical safety. The first UK children’s book we have seen which refers to contact centres and, some will say, a brave choice of subjects for a debut author. We’re delighted Circle Yuen decided to go there – her background in social justice work really comes through!”Orange background
Repeat if award/highlight logo bottom right corner.
Text reads:

Publisher description:

“A young girl loves to dance, especially when Daddy and Mummy dance with her, but these dances don’t last long.

One evening Daddy leaves home and Mummy explains that they are separating and the family won’t be dancing together anymore. During the week the young girl lives with Mummy and on Saturdays she visits Daddy at a contact centre. The family now have two new dances, each one different but both as valuable as the other”

Continuing Our Series #LittleRebelsAwardHighlights2026 A picture book which “takes a gentle but effective swipe at the extreme ends of consumerism” We may be on hiatus but we’re still here to share the best of 2025’s social justice books. Next Up: THE REALLY BEAUTIFUL THING #KidLitUK #BookSky
Three visual assets:
1. Teal background with award logo (“highlights” underneath) in right hand corner.
THE REALLY BEAUTIFUL THING
Frances Tosdevin and Ali Pye
Andersen Press
And then book cover. Teal background.
Yellow award logo with “highlights” underneath, bottom right corner.
Text reads:

“Squirrel has a happy comfy home with plenty of friends. But he is increasingly distracted and then consumed by wanting to own The Really Beautiful Thing, even while he's not entirely sure of its purpose.
To own the thing he will need money, much more money than he currently has. Sacrifices will need to be made. When he is finally able to buy the sparkly, pointy, sweet-smelling thing, he's surprised to find himself feeling unfulfilled and, what's more, very lonely.
A smart book for the very young which takes a gentle but effective swipe at the extreme ends of consumerism where consumption exists simply for its own sake bringing no merit, worth or, pointedly, happiness, to the consumer. And, because this is for the very young, Squirrel of course finds a happy ending as he rediscovers the things which really make his heart go "thumpety bump": good friends who feel like home.”Teal background.
Yellow award logo with “highlights” underneath, bottom right corner.
Text reads:

“Publisher description:
Squirrel doesn't know what The Really Beautiful Thing is, or even what it does, but it's AMAZING, and he wants it...even if it costs him Everything”

NO REFUGE
Patrice Aggs and Joe Brady
David Fickling Books
And then book cover.
2.
Yellow background with red font. Award logo bottom right.
Text reads: “This punchy graphic novel takes off from the dystopian No Country, shortlisted for the Little Rebels Award in 2022, and imagines a family fleeing the UK to seek refuge in neighbouring Europe. In this second outing, Bea and her siblings not only live in fear of the authoritarian ‘Free Kingdom’, but are also later forced to question their safety within the government enclave, where intense monitoring and effusive patriotism are smuggled in through promises of state security. A series which does so much to prompt discussion on so many contemporary issues, including: fake news; Far Right nationalism; refugees and small boat flights; civil conflict; surveillance and privacy; capitalism and excess consumerism. And, at the heart of all of this, the small pockets of resistance which somehow surface and evolve.”3.
Yellow background with text in red font. Award logo bottom right corner.
Text reads:

“Publisher description:

‘What would you do if you were forced to leave everything behind?
With the civil war raging at their doorstep, Bea and her sister Hannah have no choice but to flee their home with their little brother, Dom.
Hannah is determined not to get caught- but Bea leaves her drawings wherever they go, hoping that their dad is following their trail. With soldiers form both sides closing in and Dom getting weaker every day, will they be able to escape to safety?
And will Dad ever find them again?’

Loved last week's celebration of 10 years of The Jasmine Sneeze by Nadine Kaadan @lantanapub.bsky.social Nadine was shortlisted for the 2019 #LittleRebelsAward for Tomorrow. As Alice Curry/Lantana said at the event,Tomorrow and Jasmine Sneeze work in parallel: "you need the light and the dark".
Nadine sites, wearing a mauve/pink knee length dress. She holds a mic in her right hand and her book, Tomorrow, in her left. The book is opened on a double page spread which shows a child cowered in to a corner looking at a long yellow coloured window. Nadine now holds up different inside double spread of Tomorrow. Here she faces the audience with a smile. The pages show looming grey windowed towers, some with the very tops crumbling away. In the middle of these is a tall adult with a tower superimposed on their body. They reach their hand out to a small child to their left who is dressed in bright blue.

Visual asset. Mauve background. Pale yellow award logo top right corner with “highlights” underneath.
Reads,
“THE STREET “Kate Rafiq
Dune Books”
Followed by book cover. Cover is a dusky sky (purples/pinks), orange/purple horizon. Moon low down. Little blob creatures, in black and white, in foreground. Text against mauve background reads:

“The life of a small community comes under threat from a creeping colonising force as it exerts blockades and checkpoints, assaults on civilian infrastructures, damage to resources and, finally, evictions. And yet, this displaced population continues to exist and even thrive by reasserting their traditions, their culture- and, by never losing the hope of return.

A timeless allegory on war and displacement which also feels like a very modern parable for our times. Playful, ‘nonsense’ words, endearingly “floopy” anthropomorphic characters and a balmy, sunset palette keep the narrative appropriate for young children’s minds, allowing them to navigate the injustices laid bare by the text safely and, indeed, with some optimism”.Mauve background. Text reads:

Publisher description:

“Boo lives with his family,
In their house at the end of the street.
They’ve lived there for years,
They built it from skyblocks and mooncrete.
Zig is a teacher, Pax is a nurse,
Their love is as wide as the whole universe.
Their smoots are flooping with joy,
In their house at the end of the street.
All is well…except for the dreaded Klang!
A lyrical, heart-warming tale about standing up to bullies and staying connected, even when all hope seems lost.”

Remember how we mentioned @dapsdraws.bsky.social ‘s Hey You! recently? Dr. @darrenchetty.bsky.social is taking it and Elgan Rhys’ The Five to his @ioe.bsky.social Book Group TONIGHT! (Darren chairs the panel of #LittleRebelsAward shortlistees at our annual award ceremony)
Flyer advertising event.

Top, in yello band reads, "Children's and Young Adult LIterature (CYAL) Book Group".

Flyer then divided in to 4 squares.

We invite people to read the 2 books & come along with a question about each book; perhaps something you are curious or puzzled about or something you are keen to put to the rest of the group. The group is convened by Dr Darren Chetty.

this month we'll be looking at Dapo Adeola's Hey You! and Elgan Rhys' The Five.

Last year we heard that @ellemcnicoll.bsky.social ‘s publisher was folding… The #LittleRebelsAward is such a fan of Elle’s work- so when we heard @panmacmillan.bsky.social were giving her a new home and taking on her backlist, our little rebels hearts soared💜 #KidLitUK
