yeah i just wanted to specify it wasn't a regular hard-shelled turtle as the main caption would make people think, as that does feel a bit outside a gharial's pay-grade given its halved performance

(a soft-shell turtle, gharials still have a pretty reduced biting performance compared to all other crocodilians, like Tomistoma, pictured to the right cracking a hard-shelled Melanochelys)

Pelagosaurus typus The basalmost known metriorhynchoid, small piscivorous pursuer, sea noodle, very numerous in specimens (a 2006 thesis listed 88 specimens, with even more being figured since then), and yes the arms were that tiny. One specimen shows a gnarly healed broken jaw

Taking time out of my busy schedule to try interpret the newly described Ammonitritor very perplexing animal, loose kinetic sutures indicating a weak bite despite the very derived and bizarre grinding adaptations, which could be functionaly topped-off by extensive suction cheeks

Hoplosuchus kayi, apex predator of the morrison, ate sauropodds alive by the regular, and is in serious need of a CT scanning and revision since it was described as a late-surviving aetosaur in 1926 discovered in a fun way too, here's an article by Riley Black www.smithsonianmag.com/science-natu...

i dont trust finite element analyses for absolute values instead of comparative ones, cuz according to one of them, the animal on the bottom has a stronger posterior biteforce than the one at the top

Tinguiririca is famous for having the earliest fossil mammal assemblage dominated by hypsodonts, but we found that none of the ungulates had mesowear signals consistent with eating grass, supporting decoupling between grassland expansion and hypsodonty

second this one!, its such a large change in our understanding of these creatures if true, i just wonder how reliable is the inferral of "size at birth" based on histology

More people need to talk about how Dakosaurus is objectively the coolest looking sea reptile in all of Earth's history. No mosasaur, Pliosaur, Ichthyosaur or whatever else has ever managed to look a single bit as cool as the perpetually pissed off sea croc with infinite aura Dakosaurus is

Ambush! During a warm sunrise on eocene Europe a large Iberosuchus surprises a duo of small Lophiodontid mammals Painted here in the moment the croc uses the inertia of the attack and strong neck muscles to raise the creature up, before crashing it down on the soil to subdue it

Dakosaurus andiniensis, the shortest-snouted sea-croc and one of my favorite fossils everrrr And Geosaurus, first named as an unusually large species of modern Lacerta in 1816, it was an emblematic fossil animal during paleontology's early history throughout the 19th century

the series of dorsal vertebrae regularly surpass the 10cm long mark (with that 12,5cm one being the largest metriorhynchid vertebra that i know of) the 11 vertebrae together along make a 1.2m long chain

theres this orgasmic moment with a heavingly modulation in chopins 2nd impromptu but it then gets followed by a flourish of up-and-down scales, & it makes me a bit sad i havent found a pianist who keeps on with the previous momentum to squeeze all the beauty out of it
