#gamedev folks, what do you think of open-ended games, with no specific goals or ways to "beat" it? E.g. Rimworld or Factorio have ways to "win" them which are really not why/how most players actually play the game anyway. What if they didn't have a victory condition at all?

It's been a month (to the day!), but Quest of Dungeons is now out for the Switch 2, with some new art from yours truly! I got to make entirely new tilesets for the new mode that got included in this release! 🎨 You can read about it (and see samples of the new art!) on David's post! Go check it out!

Some new content in my game: nettles! They'll be used as a basic fabric source later, but for now they're just to give some more vegetation variety #indiedev #gamedev #indiegames

On the other hand, I have like half of it done already, and there are benefits to having a fully custom compiler stack (easier to tweak, optimize, support other platforms, etc)

I get asked this a lot, so I wanted to create an article where I share my go-to beginner resources for someone starting out game development in Godot. This weekend I was asked that again, and it pushed me to finally set aside some time and write it! ko-fi.com/post/Learnin... #gamedev #godotengine

Been thinking that, even though all the low-level compiler backend stuff is really fun, if I want to get my toy programming language anywhere (and that's a big if) I probably should just compile to C and use tcc or something like that

One of the interesting consequences of using wgpu is that because it's a heavily work-in-progress thing with actively changing spec the students are forced to rely less on llms (which hallucinate wildly) and more on archaic tools like official docs and human brains

I've released my Tone Mapping Analysis tools for comparing tone mapping LUTs, implemented as a Unity project with custom editor windows. Compare how different tone mappers look when applied to HDR .exr images, with comparison sliders and a variety of overlays and graphs. github.com/runevision/T...
A table of different images, each row shown with different tone mappers. One cell shows a comparison slider.Graphs are displayed for each tone mapper row and the Saturation Overlay is applied to the images.

I've been teaching a real-time graphics university course for 5 years now, so I figured it's a good point to modernize it: * Native WebGPU instead of OpenGL * Rust officially supported (in addition to C++) Pretty excited, we'll see how it goes!

This scraper account posts other people’s stuff without credit. They grudgingly post a separate attribution after the fact, if enough people call them out. Any time an account says “dm me if you own the original,” just put them on the block list. Don’t let these accounts get a foothold here.

Sooo there doesn't exist a color picker that suits all my specific needs, so I made my own: * HSV, sRGB and linear RGB all at once * Byte-valued (0..255) and float-valued (0..1) strings ready to copy into code * Several pickers on the same page to compare colors lisyarus.github.io/color-picker/

Managed to port my game on Mac! Had to fight a few naga (wgpu shader compiler) bugs, thankfully there were workarounds. Impostor z pre-pass is buggy and the sun shader overflows, but these are minor issues :) #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames #screenshotsaturday

Another attempt at marshes. I think I've found a nice way to generate them, just need to tweak river generation a bit now - essentially they are generated before climate affects the terrain, so the rivers+marshes heightmap interaction is wrong #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames

Simulating fish highlighted a ton of perf problems, so I've been optimizing a lot today: physics sim, water & terrain queries, needless chunk generation. Gained ~8ms decrease per frame in a scene with 10k fish, quite happy with that! #screenshotsaturday #gamedev #indiedev #indiegames
