The Prime Minister made the Government's intention to crush Freedom of Information perfectly clear with last year's failed #FOI legislative amendments. The Government cynically called it a 'reform' package, but it was
'reform' directed towards obstruction and secrecy, not openness and transparency. Since then, the Attorney-General has very deliberately ignored calls that they should not threaten successful FOI applicants with a financial bludgeon in court proceedings.
Government departments and government lawyers clearly know what the government regards as acceptable tactics in trying to suppress the release of information. The lawyers aren't freelancing; they've got the word from their political masters.

The #AustraliaInstitute commissioned a poll of 1,042 voters to test public attitudes towards stronger digital duty-of-care laws. The results were striking. #auspol

Ninety-three per cent supported a legal requirement for online platforms to provide a safe online environment and prevent harmful content.
Eighty-three per cent supported fining people who spread dangerous content.
And half of Australians - 50 per cent - said executives of offending companies should also face jail time.
There was also strong support for giving people who are harmed by online platforms a way to seek compensation.
Seventy-two per cent believed users who suffer physical or mental harm should be able to seek compensation from the platform responsible. Importantly, this was not confined to voters on one side of politics, support included 62 per cent of One Nation voters and 69 per cent of Coalition voters.
Whatever the political arguments over the government's particular Bill, these numbers point to something important.
Australians will not allow governments to stand back and let
Big Tech regulate itself.
They expect platforms to take responsibility for the consequences of the systems they design and profit from.
If a product causes harm offline, we expect someone to be accountable.
If a company sells a dangerous product, there are laws governing its conduct.

This is who Pauline Hanson is. A senator on Gina Rinehart's payroll, billing you to fly to the fundraisers. As Labor senator Murray Watt put it: "Pauline Hanson is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gina Rinehart.

It gets worse. Since the federal budget, social media has been full of memes casting government as a "silent partner" in small business: entrepreneurs take the risk, do the work, and Canberra-specifically Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in the memes - turns up with a hand out for 47%.
It is a good line. It is also misleading.
I am what people now call a
"founder". I run an economic consultancy company. I used to be a salaried employee paying the top marginal tax rate, but 20 years ago my business partner and I started our own company. We worked harder and earned more, but fundamentally did the same work we did before. Yet I paid much less tax.
Like many small-business people now complaining bitterly about the government's proposed tax changes, I have taken advantage of numerous tax breaks for founders. I had a family trust own my share of the company; distributed income to family members on low tax rates; paid out only what we needed to live on, avoiding the top marginal personal tax rate; retained the rest inside the company, accumulating value over time; and can live off retained earnings in my retirement or sell some or all of the company and potentially access the CT discount.
When founders say, "I worked hard, didn't pay myself a salary and poured the profits back into the business", spare me. Yes, we all did that, not because we were saints, but at least in part because it helped us reduce tax. Most of this is still allowed.
A salaried employee with taxable income of $200,000 pays income tax on the whole amount above the tax-free threshold - about $60,000. (Not to mention
The question is not whether the tax system should have concessions for entrepreneurs that salaried employees don't receive. I happen to think that it should. But does 12 to 20% tax on $1 million strike the right balance?
