Lisa Warner @lisawarner.bsky.social · 21/05/2026What can be done? 🔹 Individuals: Be selective and decide which conferences truly require in-person attendance ⚖️ 🔹 Scientific societies & organizers: Offer online options 🛜 🔹 Institutions & departments: Develop travel guidelines that encourage train travel 🚆 120
Lisa Warner @lisawarner.bsky.social · 21/05/2026🌡️ This is not to say that all conferences should be conducted online, but it does mean we should reflect more consciously on how we organise conferences and academic mobility, especially in light of accelerating climate change. 110
Lisa Warner @lisawarner.bsky.social · 21/05/2026💻 By contrast, attending a typical conference online (3.5 days, 8 hours per day) results in approximately 0.0168 tCO₂e (based on averages from 10 studies). This means that attending online produces only about 1.3% of the emissions associated with in-person conference participation. 100
Lisa Warner @lisawarner.bsky.social · 21/05/2026🌍 What’s the CO₂ footprint of an international academic conference? 🛫 Our analysis of 22 studies shows: travel for one in-person international conference emits ~1.23 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) per person. With local emissions its ~1.26 tCO₂e. Travel hence dominates conference footprint. 121

Lisa Warner @lisawarner.bsky.social · 26/06/2025This week I travelled from Berlin to Budapest by train to attend the #SIPS2025🚆 Instead of flying, I chose a low-emission alternative - the whole trip by train caused only about 10 kilograms of CO₂, compared to approx. 190 kilograms by plane. That’s just 5% of the emissions! 🌍 290
