From @joanhalifax.bsky.social "A human life can be whole inside an unrepaired world. Not comfortable. Not untroubled. Not spared. Whole. Present to what is actually happening and still capable of love and of action." Needed this reminder today.
A picture of a sunset pr a sunrise with clouds and a dark horizon.

And this for you today from the new book: I cannot promise that the world will be repaired. I have watched too much go unrepaired to say that honestly, and at eighty-four I will not see how most of it turns out. What I can promise, because I have watched it in others and been carried by it myself, is this: a human life can be whole inside an unrepaired world. Not comfortable. Not untroubled. Not spared. Whole. Present to what is actually happening and still capable of love and of action.

I have not been able to get this quote from @joanhalifax.bsky.social out of my head. It provides the perfect frame for explaining this moment. One derangement out of the many shaping our existence.
From Unfinished Vow, the book I am working on, as I consider the violent burning of the boundary water forests: "Consider what a lump of coal actually is. It is time: sunlight that fell on fern forests three hundred million years ago, taken in by living things, laid down, buried, compressed through spans that make the whole of human history a rounding error. Oil is the same, the concentrated time of ancient seas. Our civilization's founding act has been to burn hundreds of millions of years of stored being-time in the space of about two centuries, an eyeblink, and to exhale it into a sky whose consequences will be inherited by beings who have no vote in the matter because they have not yet been born. I know of no more precise description of the climate crisis than this: it is a derangement of time. We are spending the deep past to foreclose the future, and calling the transaction growth."

Kelli Russell Agodon poem. IT ME. "Maybe we’ll get you a little tipsy so you can calm the fuck down. Wait, sorry—that’s my anxiety, Future, you don’t even exist yet, like one of those midnight panics that wakes me when I’m certain the world has ended (has it ended?)"

Poem to the Future by Kelli Russell Agodon
April 17, 2026 ~ ONE ART

Poem to the Future

Future, if you stop by, I promise to open the door.
I know sometimes you arrive in combat boots,
laces braided with bombs and drones, even the way
you cuff your jeans feels like a subtle threat. Future,
if you come inside, I’ll offer you jasmine tea, but know
I have champagne chilling in the fridge as I keep hoping
we’ll get to celebrate you. And my neighbor will come by
with tortilla soup. She makes a hell of a martini. Maybe
we’ll get you a little tipsy so you can calm the fuck down.
Wait, sorry—that’s my anxiety, Future, you don’t even exist
yet, like one of those midnight panics that wakes me when
I’m certain the world has ended (has it ended?) Future,
I promise to treat you well. I’ll show you the faith I had
last fall when I planted daffodils, those van Gogh tulips
I ordered in a frenzy of hope. Future, I believe in spring.
I believe in you too. Come in—but take your shoes off,
leave the dirty parts in the mudroom. I keep telling
everyone you’re coming. Don’t make me a liar.
Sit with me. Show me how we survived this.

We had no reason to go so hard on this south city renovation other than we love beauty and want to be the landlords we always craved. We call it a community building exercise.
We had no idea what was under the aluminum siding of this little shotgun house - but what a surprise. This is what it looked like when we started. We didn’t even know it was brick. Just a vacant structure totally covered by aluminum siding. It’s a beautiful home now. Such detail on the arches.

Look at that stained glass arch! That was hidden under the siding.

a lovely porch upon which to sit.

What if we joined our sorrows, I'm saying. I'm saying: What if that is joy? Whew I needed to read this today and maybe you do too. I wept. Thanks, Ross Gay. From here - onbeing.org/blog/joy-is-...
And what if the wilderness—perhaps the densest wilder in there—thickets, bogs, swamps, uncrossable ravines and rivers (have I made the metaphor clear?)—is our sorrow? Or, to use Smith’s term, the “intolerable.” It astonishes me sometimes—no, often—how every person I get to know—everyone, regardless of everything, by which I mean everything—lives with some profound personal sorrow. Brother addicted. Mother murdered. Dad died in surgery. Rejected by their family. Cancer came back. Evicted. Fetus not okay. Everyone, regardless, always, of everything. Not to mention the existential sorrow we all might be afflicted with, which is that we, and what we love, will soon be annihilated. Which sounds more dramatic than it might. Let me just say dead. Is this, sorrow, of which our impending being no more might be the foundation, the great wilderness?

Is sorrow the true wild?

And if it is—and if we join them—your wild to mine—what’s that?

For joining, too, is a kind of annihilation.

What if we joined our sorrows, I’m saying.

I’m saying: What if that is joy?

From Joan on a different platform but I’m sharing here. Joanna Macy: Long time climate activists like her have so much to teach me about intention, working with grief, and living a commitment to helping situations improve for all long-term. Grateful for this wisdom.
A picture of Joanna Macy. An older woman with short grey hair and a red top. The quote from her:

Joanna Macy: “We have received an inestimable gift. To be alive in this beautiful, self-organizing universe—to participate in the dance of life with senses to perceive it, lungs that breathe it, organs that draw nourishment from it—is a wonder beyond words. It is an extraordinary privilege to be accorded a human life, with self-reflexive consciousness that brings awareness of our own actions and the ability to make choices. It lets us choose to take part in the healing of our world.”
