Thursday rant. Last night I pre-arranged an Uber to take me to the airport this morning. Upon arrival at the airport, Uber emails me that the price they charged is 10% higher than what I agreed to last night because [shrug].

Lately a lot of clearly AI-generated material is finding its way in front of me. People send me content, as if it’s their own creation, when it’s clearly not. I’m finding myself increasingly exhausted by this.

We were recently delayed nearly 24 hours in part due to the airline’s paperwork error which required maintenance to be unnecessarily duplicated and then the crew timed out. Also lost the E+ seats we paid for. Wrote to the (US) carrier and their response was basically: sucks to be you.

Increasingly, even when talking to human customer service reps, it seems I'm actually talking to AI. Today in a chat with Bell Canada, the rep's reply began with "Here's a polished and professional version" suggesting the human agent was just an interface between me and an AI agent. Sigh.

I listen to news headlines most mornings over breakfast. Today, CBC News led with coverage of the lack of a US-Canada trade deal, which will have major repercussions for both countries. NPR News Now didn’t even mention the matter and led with a discussion of the Whitehouse ballroom. 🤷‍♀️

Would be if they offered transparent pricing and a commitment that all riders are offered the same fare, but I don’t believe that is the case. As presented, what stops them from charging the “surge-protected” customers higher prices based on their WTP?

Hey fellow economists, does this strike you as a little sneaky? The Lyft app offers to “let” people reveal their willingness to pay if they pay a fee! Seems like a win-win for Lyft, not so much for the rider.

Happy to have gotten a few hours of sleep at a hotel courtesy of the airline. Hilariously, they have rebooked me on a series of flights rather than on any of the direct flights they are happy to sell other passengers via their website. Not going anywhere until late afternoon at the earliest.

Rumor has it the weather caused about 6,000 passengers to unexpectedly find themselves overnighting in Chicago, which is how I find myself at a Doubletree Hotel a solid 30 minute drive from the airport. Looking forward to trying again to get home after some sleep. Good night, er, good morning!
