Four-in-ten NEETs are not receiving means-tested benefits. In fact, the share of NEETs claiming means-tested benefits has remained stable in recent years. So, any theory for what is driving up the NEET rate can’t only blame the benefits system. Read the full analysis➡️ buff.ly/gABGpwv
In the chart, we show that since 2019, the share of NEETs in receipt of means-tested benefits has barely increased (from 60 per cent on the eve of the pandemic, to 63 per cent in 2025.

Because it happens in slow-motion we (still) tend to underappreciate the scale of demographic change & its profound implications for society. Compare (expected) UK child population in 2035 to that in 1971. Scotland = 44% lower, Wales = 30% lower, Northern Ireland = 34% lower & England 16% lower
