Global immunization efforts have saved at least 154 million lives over the past 50 years
A major landmark study reveals that global immunization efforts have saved an estimated 154 million lives – or the equivalent of 6 lives every minute of every year – over the past 50 years. The vast m...

📢 We are hiring! A postdoctoral position in Immunology and Microfluidics is available at @pasteur.fr in Paris. The project aims at using a lymphoid organ-on-chip model to evaluate innovative mRNA vaccines. The 2.5-year postdoctoral position is funded in the frame of the European Vaccine Hub project.

SARS-COV-2 causes infected cells to lose their motile cilia, which may facilitate viral spread. In this infected nasal cell, one can see membrane protrusions engulfing a bunch of cilia. Nice SEM image made by Vincent Michel. Glad it made the cover of J. Virol. 😊 doi.org/10.1128/jvi....

Our recent paper: SARS-CoV-2 Omicron replicates faster than previous variants in a nasal mucosa model when grown at 33°C, the temperature found in nasal passages. It replicates fast, evades interferons, and manages to impair motile cilia! journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/... Kudos to Barbara Fonseca!

An important study from the team of Ron Germain showing that combining an antiviral (Tamiflu) with immunomodulation (interferon or CD8 blockade) can prevent death from influenza virus infection in mice. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Rebalancing viral and immune damage versus repair prevents death from lethal influenza infection
Maintaining tissue function while eliminating infected cells is fundamental, and inflammatory damage plays a major contribution to lethality after lung infection. We tested 50 immunomodulatory regimes...

📢 New preprint! We compared SARS-CoV-2 variants in an epithelium model grown at a temperature found in nasal passages (33°C). Omicron replicated to higher levels, caused more cilia damage, but induced less interferon than previous variants. Thus, Omicron could be fast but stealthy!

Stealth replication of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron in the nasal epithelium at physiological temperature
The COVID-19 pandemic was marked by successive waves of SARS-CoV-2 variants with distinct properties. The Omicron variant that emerged in late 2021 showed a major antigenic shift and rapidly spread wo...

I #StandUpforSciences because - it drives the discoveries that save countless lives - investment in innovation secures our children’s future - collaboration is the only way to face pandemics alone. - it strengthens our economies. - only knowledge can we build a healthier, more resilient world.
