Wait, why is there never /u:/ in any of these?

May her memory be a blessing, and if we are especially lucky, perhaps it will end up being a catalyst for a revolt against the venal ultrawealth that is corroding everything now.

(which she helped fund--and I was a Moderna girlie), among her other accomplishments. There are so few uncontroversially good, mega-famous role models out there and Dolly was one of them. It's such a stark contrast to the staggering avarice of most other multi-millionaires & billionaires.

I'm super sad about Dolly. I wasn't a megafan of her music, but still she was present in my life. A cover of Jolene was one of the first things we arranged when I started playing in a band. A show by Doll Parts, a Dolly cover band, was the first thing I went to in public after the first vaccine

I think voicelessness also conditions it, but could someone get "hambzder"? I dunno, maybe! We can record people saying "doomsday" and see what happens :)

Lisa Davidson @lisabdavidson.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Yes, I think it could happen there too, tho I do think it's more likely if you're going from nasal stop at one place of artic to a less constricted fricative at a different place of artic, bc the tongue could already be fully constricting for the /t/ in your examples and then you wouldn't get /p/.

Lisa Davidson @lisabdavidson.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
The fricative in the hamster and Chomsky cases is what conditions the epenthetic stop, so I don't think you'd expect it in 'lambda'

As someone who sometimes needs to think about lexical gaps for a living, this list caused me a momentary record scratch. For one thing, I wouldn't have guessed that the -id column would be the most complete one.

That could be, and wouldn't be surprising because they're still perfecting articulatory coordination. But I have to respond to a reviewer by pointing out adult data, so that's what's relevant here :)

As it turns out, word length was not significant in your results, Eleanor, but frequency was! (Chodroff and Wilson 2017, JPhon :)

Linguists: does anyone know of a study showing that VOT shortens the longer the word is? (E.g., something like the Moon and Lindblom 1989 paper, except for VOT and not whole segments.)

Fine if someone mispronounces it the first time. But NY politicians like Hochul, Sliwa and Cuomo have been having to say this name for so many months now that there’s no excuse for making mistakes on this phonotactically legal-in-English name other than…well you know.
