Is there a connection between air pollution and aggressive human behaviour? In a case study of Seattle between 2013 and 2023, #UniKonstanz @lionkircheis.bsky.social documents an average of 3.6 percent more violent crimes on days when smoke from wildfires is present. Details: t1p.de/bldlc

These costs won't be shared equally. Outdoor workers, people without access to filtered air, and homeless populations face higher exposure. Cleaner air isn't just about health policy; it's about human security. Paper: doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ae436c IOP News: ioppublishing.org/news/wildfir...

This matters because wildfire seasons are getting worse. 2025 was Europe's worst fire year in over two decades. Smoke is becoming a major source of air pollution globally. If even a clean-air city like Seattle sees more violence on smoke days, we need to take the social costs of smoke seriously.

Whether smoke reaches Seattle on a given day depends on distant fires and wind patterns. That's essentially random. I use this as a natural experiment to isolate the effect of wildfire-driven air pollution on assaults. Result: each 1 µg/m³ more PM2.5 pollution → 0.5% more assaults.

My first paper is out today in Environmental Research Letters. Wildfire smoke doesn't just harm your lungs; it's also linked to violence. Using 11 years of data from Seattle, I find that smoke days see 3.6% more violent assaults. 🧵 A short thread on what was found. doi.org/10.1088/1748-9326/ae436c

Wildfire Smoke Linked to Rise in Violent Assaults, New 11-Year Study Finds
A new study spanning eleven years of data has revealed a clear link between wildfire smoke pollution and an increase in violent assaults in Seattle. Published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, these findings represent the first direct causal evidence that short-term exposure to wildfire-driven air pollution can increase interpersonal violence in an urban environment.  As wildfires intensify around the world due to climate change, Lion […] The post Wildfire Smoke Linked to Rise in Violent Assaults, New 11-Year Study Finds appeared first on IOP Publishing.

Analysis of 11 years of Seattle data shows short-term exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with a measurable increase in violent assaults, particularly in outdoor settings. doi.org/hbqppv
