The Sixth Nik - Hard sci-fi from a horror master
Jacob Englesman review The Sixth Nik, about an eccentric, mutated crew of societal outcasts. A young girl, Sisilla, journeys through a universe plagued by a toxic, hostile internet and mutating diseases. Author Daniel Kraus does some seriously taggering worldbuilding and its sharp social commentary on bodily autonomy, religious control, and class divides. But beware, beneath its high-concept sci-fi veneer lies an aggressively violent, visceral, and gruesome horror story that will deeply challenge squeamish readers.

They Will Kill You (2026) - A Mixed Bag of Influences for a Unique Horror Comedy Ride - Malevolentdark
Horror movies never exist in a vacuum; they mirror societal fears and borrow from broader culture. Kirill Sokolov’s They Will Kill You (2026) exemplifies this by blending classic horror influences—like Rosemary’s Baby and Evil Dead—with unexpected cultural frameworks. Starring Zazie Beetz as a trained fighter battling immortal Satanists, the film reimagines Dante’s Inferno by structuring its apartment building around the 7 Deadly Sins. It also channels Japanese Ronin tropes through its Kill Bill-esque revenge narrative. While the non-stop, bloody action can feel repetitive, its clever references and stylized humor deliver a memorable, high-octane ride.

Iron Lung (2026) – Drowning Hollywood in Blood - Malevolentdark
Adapted by YouTube star Mark Fischbach (Markiplier) from David Szymanski’s video game, *Iron Lung* (2026) is a box-office-breaking cosmic horror masterpiece. Set after “The Quiet Rapture”, an event that wiped out all stars and inhabited planets, the story follows convict Simon as he pilots a tiny, submersible through an ocean of human blood on a desolate moon. Exploring themes of guilt, sacrifice, and Biblical allegory, the film builds terrifying tension as Simon realizes an intelligent, monstrous entity is stalking him. Made for just $6 million, this privately funded indie triumph has grossed over $51 million, threatening Hollywood studio dominance and injecting fresh energy into the horror genre.
