The woodwork is rightly the star of the show but the furnishings are definitely underrated

Just took a tour of the Gamble House in Pasadena (probably most famous as Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future) and I don’t think I’ve seen this much varied Tiffany work outside of Chicago, no just stained glass but light fixtures, lamps, and ceramics.

NYC DSA members are very sensitive when it comes to someone pointing out they may be associated with terrible online behavior through no fault of their own 🤷🏽‍♀️

The Democrats haven’t been centered on Clintonism decades and yet it’s still a big part of the narrative among their critics. The idea that since the DSA suddenly decided their foreign policy optics mattered in 2025 their IC statements should be completely forgotten is a stupid request
would it kill some of you to acknowledge the org has changed because of some of those criticisms? or is it 2022 eternally

Here’s the logic, such as it is:
I cannot possibly imagine how the person who helped silence Palestinians while campaigning with the cheneys and used to do candid shots in front of the border wall while bragging about putting poor mothers in jail might struggle to authentically represent american multiculturalism

“Tone marker: playful”
I guess at this point I'm supporting Argentina for being the only remaining team in my hemisphere. I can't imagine a world where I root for any of the Big 3 of Colonialism.

(Before you call me a hypocrite I wouldn't root for the USMNT either)

Pretty much the most convincing argument of the Dem moderates since 2000 was the Supreme Court so this is a straight bullshit take
This is what the moderates got us.

The Obamalisk is looking more and more like a cenotaph for the empty promises of centrist liberalism.

So, again, there’s the rub: what does “appreciate” mean in actual policy? Because right now the anti tax craze among people presumably left of center “appreciates” this but it’s not based on the reality that progressive taxation would require much more to build a better social safety net.
So, I do want to defend the practice of pulling levers and taking measurements. Because that's all we have and it's the only real hope of setting good policy.

But I also want to appreciate there's a subjectivity to the questions we're asking and what we're trying to accomplish.

I do find it interesting that the real test of international leadership to this person ISN’T “how many less people are killed under my watch”
obama is better because he murdered less people.

Isn’t this meal kit delivery? Some of which are just microwave meals at this point, so no cooking required. It’s interesting that they never became larger part of this convo
If a leftist delivery co-op appeared that paid every driver a living wage and made sure that every subscrIber had healthy and fulfilling food options that met all manner of dietary restrictions and needs, some of you weirdos would still sneer at people for needing to use "burrito taxis" at all.

So … apparently if this person sells their 850k home for something else the 500k in profit afterwards is basically equivalent to facing homelessness. 🤯
No, they aren’t identical.

That asset only constitutes wealth if I trade it for homelessness.

Hey, someone admitted it’s about status, not survival:
Americans eat over a pound of beef per week on average. This is unusual on a historical scale in the same way that someone making $10,000 per year is making a lot of money in comparison to someone in Uganda, but human welfare is measured in relation to the society in which they live.

Compared with the past, a Disney trip is more expensive, to be sure, but perhaps more important, it feels much more expensive, because at every turn one is being invited to level up and spend more. Thanks to social media, we can now see the experiences that divide us. Go to Instagram and search for #Club33, the invitation-only clubs hidden within Disney properties. What you see there will not make you feel a kinship with your fellow man, unless you are one of the very few invited in.

I guess we can do this “you’re focusing on the wrong thing” all day. Left populism has symbolism on its side but what is more important: symbolic power or policy that actually grapples with and can intervene in people’s lives?
I think “left wing” populism is quickly becoming a pejorative meaning “economic approach that I don’t like or agree with“

The tell is given away when it’s compared to the right wing populism that’s currently ripping this country to shreds

I’m trying to quit the bait but words mean things, but more importantly both fascism and neoliberalism are both historically existing phenomena and you can in fact compare what is happening in those regimes, as well as understanding that they are describing different phenomena in societies/economies
Neoliberalism is a soft fascism. In practice they both wish to do away with (bourgeois) democracy, enrich the upper class, annihilate social welfare. Neoliberals setup multiple fascist regimes in LatAm.

The difference is, neoliberalism likes global trade & doesn't say the quiet part(s) out loud.

Posting about a general strike with smirking condescension at actual real live protests is definitely a CHOICE.
I beg “No Kings” Americans to discuss a general strike.

Break your economy. You can’t be serious about ending this regime while you keep spending disposable income and propping up the economy as a consumer.

You wanna break it? Stop buying new things. Repair things. Buy used. Don’t eat at chains.

It’s a fascinating thread to read when you consider that the subtext of the statement (and all the ones agreeing with it) is the “obvious” “bad stuff” isn’t really enough to support the candidate opposing Trump
Honest question, when people say “Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris were right about everything,” what are they referring to that isn’t the most obvious “bad stuff is gonna happen” stuff

Antisemitism and Islamophobia are especially useful to Christian nationalists (and/or the political factions that want their support) because uncritical support of Israel has a very useful effect of being detrimental to both self-identified Jewish people and Muslim people
Respectfully, how are they either related or intertwined? I agree that they serve the same people, as most bigotries do, but they developed independently and manifest differently

Gee, ya think?
Much of this is downstream of having successfully catapulted a socialist into executive office without a sufficiently strong socialist parliamentary bloc. We would have been running into the same problems if Bernie won in 2016. Sucks but that's what it is.

lol this reminds me of the long protracted online “debate” over M4A details among Warren/Sanders/others in the 2020 Dem primary only for the offline Joe Biden to win it. Like. You’re arguing over a fantasy that distracts from the reality of what needs to be done
This is true and many leftwing critics often bolster this aspect as key towards the road to single payer

Defending the ACA gains are important but yelling at anyone who wants more like they’re ungrateful dullards in a time where we greatly need some political offense doesn’t make sense to me

As a lapsed Catholic who attends mass, I am struck by how the rituals of activism has replaced the rituals of religion as a way to communicate solidarity/comfort. But lapsed Catholics seem to view rituals as symbolism and ~not~ Doing Works and I’m not sure how much the same applies to activism RN.
absolutely and I think that’s really important! they’re denied communion in there, which is actually incredibly unusual, so this is the next best way to bring the Eucharist to them. maybe it gave some small degree of reassurance to some very scared people that they aren’t forgotten

Unironically using the word “idpol” is definitely a red flag
They don't want to engage with valid criticism so they're using idpol to paint it as problematic. They're refusing to acknowledge the term go back to brunch is calling out their lack of commitment to action and instead telling themselves we're literally mad at them for having brunch specifically

It helps that: 1) education polarization may actually be effective in helping obfuscate macroeconomic factors 2) segregation (racial/economic/geographic) allows for people to believe that the ill effects of economic policies can be mitigated by pushing consequences on people they don’t know
We were reliably informed that high prices made the electorate willing to volunteer for the SS, but now we are to believe that the electorate will cling desperately to higher and higher prices as long as people they don’t know get to be rentseekers at their expense.

Glad this account blocked me because I can say with my whole chest: this is pretty much the opposite of a materialist way of understanding language, especially sociopolitical language. Call it philosophy, call it religion, call it Plato’s idealism … it is not a historically minded interpretation.
One must keep in mind that Leftists have been using it this way since long before Limbaugh and company turned "liberal" into a snarl word for Democrats, and such connotations are US specific. The conservative political party in Australia in the Liberal Party, for example.

It's because leftists use the term "liberal" to mean people who believe in liberalism, which is the dominant socio-economic model of the world currently. Since it is the current norm, defending it can be considered conservative and thus right wing. It's consistent even if you disagree.

I think what I dislike about the use of “treats” to frame this discourse is that no party to this discussion would consider the device they’re typing with as a treat. I deeply suspect that people who type this also think information technology should be free.
“Naptime” in this case is “slave or near-slave conditions for the people who make all our stuff”, and cotton candy is “a more equitable arrangement”. However, I get the sense that you would not like the alternative I would suggest so I will leave the discussion here. Your blog is very good

PSA: This sounds weird but after a big win folks often lash out at those closest to them for the dumbest reasons. Many on the left are programmed on losses don't know how to process wins. Just let people run their course and don't take it personally.

Trust me, it gets easier ❤️

Is subtlety inherently good? Is obviousness inherently bad? Are we actually talking about the artistic merit of subtle metaphors versus obvious metaphors, or are we talking about respectability politics?

Nah … not a huge fan of it as it seems to die on the absolute lack of chemistry between the leads (sorry) but I’ve fantasized dropping Denzel into it. The Branagh version leans into the cheese pretty hard.

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to organize and mobilize liberals. And I think a tiny subsection of them can be reached, I think anarchists *should* go to shitshows like No Kings (I went), and I applaud those anarchists working to reach libs.

But there's a vast gulf in knowledge and motivations.
