ran into a tumblr post about how predators in spaces that care about social justice operate, and i'm haunted by how PERFECTLY it describes ren/persephius/byletri's behavior and how other bullies like him operate. please keep this in mind for the next time this inevitably crops up again as a strategy

predators in sj spaces know exactly what they’re doing.

They post intensely personal shit to get people on their side. They post sob stories. They might pick and choose people to “befriend”, well-intentioned people who are often victims of trauma themselves who seek these spaces bc they believe them to be safe. Of course, intensely personal stories and sad stories and picking friends are not exclusive to abusers, obviously! But then it escalates.

They will use buzzwords about their identity when called out (“I’m a xyz, I can’t possibly be abusive!”), or further play victim, or even accuse OTHER people of abuse (“YOU’RE BULLYING ME! Stop bullying me!!!”). They will get other people to cosign their bullshit. They’ll publicly do extreme things to get people to sympathize with them, such as threaten self harm. Their stories sound completely outrageous yet we still believe them bc many in those spaces are well intentioned and will give benefit of the doubt (not bad things to have innately) because they want everyone to feel welcomed (again, not an innately bad thing).

Abusers in sj spaces rely on the silence and discomfort of other people who do not want to accidentally be on the “wrong side” in order to keep perpetuating their abuse. They shout down and accuse anyone who calls them out on certain statements or mistakes as bullies and will probably employ terms like “tone policing” or some other sj buzzword. They rely on the fact that you’re probably second guessing your instincts because this person seems like a perfectly legitimate “socially aware” “progressive” person who knows all of the right terms and things to say, even if the way and context in which they say these things has massively fucked up implications.

Abusers in sj spaces and in general have no boundaries: they will dominate the space, make themselves into a perfect image of the “kind” of person the space is “supposed” to be for, and roll with it from there.

We cannot just straight up believe everything we’re told on the Internet. Even in this age of oversharing, ESPECIALLY in this age of oversharing, when people make themselves look vulnerable in order to exploit other people. I am especially worried that young and impressionable people will get the sense that the only way to be a “good person” is to throw their support behind people like this, people who talk the right talk but might post unsettling and upsetting shit.

I beg you please, PLEASE be careful. If someone’s words make you feel uncomfortable, you have the right to not engage. You have the right to stay away, even if other people are trying to guilt you into interacting with this person. You should NEVER FEEL GUILTED INTO DOING ANYTHING FOR ANOTHER PERSON. Social justice should NOT be created through guilt and fear.
