Deaf history is part of Hawaiʻi's history! UHM is meeting the moment: "Enrollment [in ASL courses] has grown by 1,400% in six years, from 19 students in spring 2019 to 265 in fall 2025," and students can now major in Linguistics with a specialization in American Sign Language!

NYT reports a sharp decline in PhD admissions since last year. I see it happening in my department. Funding is down, but job uncertainty is a major driver, too. There's no longer a guaranteed job in academia after grad school; why would students risk debt and years of low pay for no clear benefit?

Help Bring an ASL Interpreter Program to Hawaiʻi! Hawaiʻi is currently facing a severe shortage of #AmericanSignLanguage (ASL) interpreters, and we are one of only eight states without an interpreter training program. Right now, the legislature is in the final stages of considering a measure...

Every linguistics student will learn in an intro class that multilingualism is more common in the world than monolingualism. For years I never had a proper citation for that claim, but I just read Blyth (1995) and found this! Yes, it's still logic rather than statistics, but it's something.
A quote from Blyth (1995) that cites Fraga et al. (1994) as an initial estimate of just how many multilingual people there are in the world.

Made it to Singapore for #NWAVAP8! Walking around Orchard Road yesterday made me think of none other than Labov's famous Department Store study... each mall in the neighborhood caters to different social classes of shoppers, and the languages seen and heard in them reflects this.

If you've got a paywall, just check out the @aaup.org report itself here: data.aaup.org/fcs-ft-facul... I spent a good hour comparing schools, faculty ranks, affiliations, and regions, and then another hour thinking about if I'm going to be able to buy a house.

Andrew Cheng (@linguistandrew) studied long-time YouTubers who had moved — and found interesting things about how their accents changed. Plus, the method has interesting pros and cons. I really enjoyed this one! Check it out: APPLE PODCASTS: bit.ly/3RT1ahl SPOTIFY: bit.ly/4k96zgb
Graphic for an interview featuring Dr. Andrew Cheng. On the right side, a smiling man with short black hair styled in an undercut, wearing clear-framed glasses and small hoop earrings, is dressed in a light brown patterned button-down shirt. The background has lush green palm leaves.
On the left side, an orange panel contains large text reading 'Exclusive Interview.' Below, smaller text states: 'Listen to a new conversation with Dr. Andrew Cheng, professor of Linguistics at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, located in Honolulu.'
At the bottom left, there is a cartoon illustration of a woman with red hair, glasses, and a pencil behind her ear, wearing a green shirt and smiling. The 'QDT' logo is in the bottom right corner.

The question of whether the US should or should not have an official language is uninteresting. Of actual concern: the recent EO is directly linked to an anti-immigrant, anti-education "English-only" movement which will add to the stigmatization of other languages and the people who speak them.

I've taught Labov's landmark studies in almost every single one of my courses, whether they are sociolinguistics courses or not. His legacy of contributions to linguistics and language studies is extraordinary. Rest in peace, #BillLabov.
