All three 3D-printable Spiny Softshell model files are now available on Savimade.ca for folks with 3D printers. There's an adult female, adult male, and a young juvenile. #SciArt 🐢

I brought the adult female Spiny Softshell 3D-printed model to the park to take pictures of her and BOY did that attract a lot of attention... 😆 I just made the file available if anyone wants to try to print her themselves. Keep in mind she's kind of huge though! 48cm long carapace.

I'm sure there is a lot of overlap, but I don't have to digitally colour anything. And I also don't have to be as aware of how easy it is to animate the geometry because it will never be animated.

To compare what I'm doing to AI generating an image is inaccurate. It's more like comparing typing a book vs hand-writing it. But with the added task of hand-painting all of the illustrations afterward. I posted some of the process of the female turtle on my account before the finished piece.

Lincoln Savi @lincolnsavi.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
Yes. But I digitally sculpted the original geometry rather than physically sculpting in clay for example. So without some technology to go from digital to physical (like 3D printing) the physical turtles wouldn't exist.

This comment reveals how little you know about things. Where did the geometry come from that the printer printed? I sculpted it for 8+ hours. Where did the colours come from after the print was done? I painted it on with an air brush and paint brushes. It also took hours.

I finished the set of 3D printed Spiny Softshell turtles! 🐢 Aren't they fun? The female is the largest animal model I've made by volume so far. I printed her in 7 pieces. #SciArt #NatureArt

Last night I did a bit of sanding and puttying and sanding to the Spiny Softshell carapace. I think this will do a good job of hiding the seams.

I tried something new when making the eyes for this spiny softshell model. Usually I just 3D print a sphere for eyes and then paint on the surface of it and then clear coat it. This time, I recessed the iris and pupil. I Painted them, and then built up the lens of the eyes with UV resin. WAY COOLER!

I think it's important for people to learn what species they have locally so they can be excited about them and feel some responsibility for their well-being. Since we as a species have largely taken over the planet, it seems like the right thing to do: make sure other species can still live here.🐡🐍

I've added two fully finished models of Great Auk eggs to Savimade.ca. Great Auks were hunted to extinction in the 1800s. Their eggs were also highly sought after by Victorian egg collectors. These models are 3D prints that were covered in spackling compound, sanded, and painted. #SciArt

The one time I tried one I didn't like that it wasn't as clear at the two part epoxy I was used to. It looked like it had an almost waxy finish to it.

I've been working on some 3D printed American Eel life cycle models this week. The final step, that I'm doing right now, is applying a two-part epoxy clear coat. This eel is currently hanging from the ceiling while it cures. #3Dprinting #eels #SciArt 🐟

This is a 3D printed and painted American Toad model. 🐸 I finished the original sculpt about 6 years ago so I revisited and updated it to my liking. I printed it in resin on an Anycubic Photon mono m5s and painted it with Golden high flow acrylics using both an air brush and paint brushes.
