A Link Between Genders: Trans Joy and the Legend of Zelda

I got hate mail today, so resharing a piece that NEVER fails to make people mad -- how trans and genderqueer people relate to Link and the Legend of Zelda Games. Link is any gender you want him to be. : ))))

gizmodo.com

Link’s Awakening takes a more literal meaning for many transgender people who love the main character of the Legend of Zelda franchise.

Kingfisher & Wombat @tkingfisher.com · 23/09/2026

i saw a little bit of this kerfuffle and then immediately rolled my eyes and stopped reading. i really liked it! Read it in three days, had a lot of emotions, laughed at the jokes, enjoyed the gut churning Oh God No moments and even thought the ending (which was kinder than i expected) was well done

every now and then a storygamer like me sighs and yearns for a THAC0 table

hehehe ty ty ty. i had a great time with the book and chatting with you about Games and Vampires and Books and Incompatible Moral Systems.

totally. astarion remains fixable but not "fixed"! I loved the book, haters can stay mad or just keep replaying BG3. : )))

Anyway please read this inter/eview and then read Astarion when it comes out, thank you. : )

T. Kingfisher was kind enough to yap with me about this novel, which, let me tell you, made me laugh out loud one moment, wince in pain the next, and scream "PLEASE JUST KISS HIM" in such quick succession that I knew KNEW T. Kingfisher has played thousands of hours of tabletop games.

This book was a genuine delight. Brutal and mean and filled with moments of barely-revealed tenderness that belies the fact that Astarion is an absolute bastard. Kingfisher captures Astarion's voice so perfectly it was like I had Neil Newbon speaking in my ear. A lovely, sad, tragic read.

genuinely i love that gen z/new fans (who could be older!) are rediscovering old fandoms and brushing off rarepairs and going... this one... this is the best thing this fandom has ever done.

1220

is this what gets me to read twilight after 10 million years? no. but i will watch supercuts on tikok. : ) for research

1140

the gen z twihards aren't debating edward vs jacob they've learned from our mistakes, now they're out here writing 300K Carlisle Cullen x Charlie Swan fanfics and drawing 23 page full color comics and the romance is on another level

1343

Right! This is very much what i'm coming up against and I really dislike it, it's forcing gatekeeping at the expense of newcomers and i really hate it

yeah i'm going to write something for @fansplaining.bsky.social about all the ai emails i ahve to deal with in our pitch inbox. it's so so grim
