There's a company out there selling watches that are basically overpriced casios on the basis that they are not smart watches. As in a normal watch. It's an f91w that costs twice as much.

Steppin out From my favorite spot in wyman park, mainly because it's a nice isolated spot with a big rock to it on, but also because this can happen if you just sit patiently at the right time of day. #photography #wildlife #birds

been thinking about this for years, now articulated:
XKCD formatted meme that shows a large stack of blocks labelled with "all sci-fi and futuristic art direction". in a small corner of the stack is a single, critical, load-bearing block labelled with "a painting done by syd mead sometime in the 1970s"

you shouldn't take an iced coffee to a job interview because you shouldn't be trying to get a job. you should be digging an enormous pit or a complex system of tunnels

My point has only ever been "this is possible, I've seen it happen", and so far the *only* argument made against this is "it's not possible because there *may* be hidden problems". Does this not seem mismatched to you?

Making some gadget or data collection thing isn't comparable in stakes to buying a house. Getting tired of analogies, but think of it like slapping together a plywood shelf for a weird shaped corner in the basement. It's not supposed to take the place of critical, quality work.

Of course it can. Everything can. "Home automation doohickey" was a single example, I've seen people solve problems I don't know of an existing drop in solution for. In my life it is a *fact* that they are now able to do that. I've tried to find angles where this is a bad development and I can't.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Like, you're all listing very valid problems with working with it professionally. I get that since you're being heavily pressured to use it it's very personal. I don't think it should be used in that context. That said you can't handwave ordinary people being able to just conjure simple stuff.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Some types of projects could have long term problems you wouldn't see at first, sure, but not everything. Would also be true of someone trying to cobble it together the old fashioned way by copying and pasting off the internet, which will take longer and may not work either.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Oh like, something else you'd be able to check for and observe? Damn that's crazy
100
Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Everyone else here managed to come up with long term problems you might not notice, this is one you would notice immediately.
100
Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
The scenarios you're imagining are also possible when someone is just throwing something together by copying and pasting, and many of them won't even get functional results and will spend much more time on it when they have no interest in learning the craft.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
From your own description of your experience it doesn't sound like you know that much more than I do, outside your specific field of security. Y'all are picturing commercial products, not something with a single use and immediate output that only gets built once.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
And again, this may as well read: "speaking as a plumber, you only *think* your shower works, you aren't actually wet, that's not water" Authority is not enough to override observable phenomena, never has been. It will be easier to fight the harm being done if you're realistic. Best of luck.

People repeatedly building useful tools for themselves is irrelevant because they don't understand exactly how it works? I don't think other uses are comparable, writing prose or asking it a question can't be as easily evaluated as software that either works or doesn't.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
For you this is true, and for myself, I don't disagree. For some people, for some tasks, it's simpler to use them than not. I don't think it's helpful to pretend this isn't true. I don't think there's really anything else to be said here.
100
Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
You're telling me something I've seen with my own eyes more than once is not possible, that something I've seen accomplish things has no utility. I wanted to believe the same things for a long time, but it doesn't survive contact with reality. Hope it works out for you though.

Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Only if there is a downstream. If it does one function as intended and never needs to be extended/scaled, any incomprehensible or inefficient code isn't a real problem for someone who only values functionality.
100
Allen Bryan @limulus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Those are reasons it isn't useful for most of the tasks it's being pushed for, including anything remotely professional, serious, or long term in nature, but not everything is like this. Arguments against using it will be more effective if they're realistic. That's all.
