This is like getting Al Capone for tax evasion. It's worth doing even when it *feels* unsatisfying.

I see that the article is essentially about the "submit in advance" types (like many law partners and university presidents), and not about oligarchs. The most we can do about those types is to try to create a country in which their submission was obviously counterproductive, not just craven.

Oversimplifying... Thiel thinks anyone opposing maximal AI is Antichrist-like, implying (in his philosophy) maximal AI is essentially the Second Coming. That's a pseudo-Christian gloss on the idea that technology will allow humans to transcend humanity and live forever.

This code is unpredictable by design. The accountability should be for creating something you can't control. Imperfect analogy, but we arrest people for impaired driving (inability to control a vehicle); we don't wait for impaired drivers to crash and hurt someone.

I don't think members of this group are really Democrats in any significant way. I think they're either (a) voting to express their frustration with the party in power, or (b) picking the side they think is winning because that's more fun than losing.

He knows calling things he doesn't like "woke" is getting old, so he's trying to make "socialism" the new "woke." (Or maybe he really wants to say "cultural Marxism," but thinks that sounds too highfalutin.)

Essential tremor affecting the vocal cords, the one thing I have in common with Collins and RFK Jr. It sucks sounding weird this way. I don't think anyone should judge either of them on that, but I don't mind people judging them on their own obvious lack of merits.

Essential tremor affecting the vocal cords and probably the only thing I have in common with Collins and RFK Jr. It sucks sounding weird, but I have no trouble judging them on their actual bad qualities.

It's bigotry to treat a group as a monolith. Maybe antisemitic *incidents* would decrease if Netanyahu stopped the depredations in Gaza, but the people who equate all Jews to Israel would still be antisemites.

I can usually distance myself from that kind of sadness and can take aesthetic pleasure in those stories. Sometimes, they hit a raw spot where actual grief bubbles up. I can usually tell when an animal death is likely to hurt. Spoilers please.

Both are wrong. The destruction is not popular. However, watching it without a good option for stopping it contributes to demoralization. People probably shouldn't risk much just for the Kennedy Center, but all this standing by saps our wills.

The image says the inspiration was "Starship Troopers." Most people now understand the movie to be director Paul Verhoeven's satire on fascism. The costumes were even more obviously Nazi inspired than those of the Empire in "Star Wars."

Lots of people *talk* tough to Trump. Does he have anything he can realistically *do* to Trump and is he doing it? (Not entirely a rhetorical question. I have to admit that I'm not entirely familiar with the powers of provincial premiers.)

No Democrat wants this to happen before there's a Democratic president. The whole point is to change the balance of power in the Supreme Court, not to have thirteen justices for the sake of having the number of justices match the number of circuits.

The Republicans would have to both (1) abolish the filibuster and (2) get the expansion vote through *before* the midterms. It takes a trifecta to do this, and they're unlikely to have the House after the end of this year.

Smallpox and rabies vaccines are pre-20th Century. The first DPT was late 1940s. Salk's polio was 1955. The Salk vaccine was a huge deal, and it's certainly the case that vaccine development really took off after that. www.vaccinationfacts.com/research/his...

These might be kids too young to be vaccinated. If you're in an affected area, it's worth knowing that kids can receive a dose of MMR before they're a year old, and this can be appropriate during an outbreak.

Some states still have laws on the books barring atheists from elected office. They're currently unenforceable,* but they're what's meant by a "religious test." *I deeply hope this isn't something our Supreme Court decides to mess with.

For context, the quote is Thomas Jefferson discussing slavery.
Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever; that considering numbers, nature and natural means only, a revolution of the wheel of fortune, an exchange of situation is among possible events; that it may become probable by supernatural interference! The Almighty has no attribute which can take side with us in such a contest.

Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia Query xviii: Manners (1784)

Read long form independent journalism. It's hard to do serious analysis in 300 characters. The degree of harm to the competence of the federal government is worse than words like "fascist" can convey.

We might just get 51 votes to kill the filibuster and expand the Court. I don't think we're going to get enough senators to convict after impeachment.

In most districts, progressives who win their primaries are going to have to rely on votes from moderates, centrists, and people who vote Democratic out of habit to win the general. They'll be toast without a bit of "Vote Blue no matter who" vote.

I'm with you if you're also willing to have the government pay family members a third of that for acting as caregivers. $40 an hour caregivers would force a lot of people into unpaid caregiving.

Without a veto-proof majority, all a congressional majority can do is investigate things and block nominees and bills. Therefore, I think that the most likely sort of disappointment will be "centrists" breaking with the majority to pass bills or confirm nominees.

I've been known to ask people whether God has a penis. The answer is usually something like "That's not the point at all." That's when I ought to ask whether they are saying God simply *identifies* as male... but I chicken out.

The dynamic described seems plausible. However, this week aside, my impression is that Democratic primary voters often pick candidates more moderate than their preferences. This is rational in swingy states/districts, but, if I'm right, elsewhere, it suggests some other dynamic at work.

Without a constitutional amendment, the only clear path is to enlarge the Court. That will take a federal Democratic trifecta and, probably, ending the filibuster. These are risks to this, but the Cour can strike down anything else.

This sounds profound and lovely, but is it true? We can want the constitution to be about "We the People," but our reality is shaped by critical details like the apportionment of senators.

These are Air Force recruits. The Air Force is probably a hair more selective than the Army, but it's also probably the most right wing of the services. Certainly the Air Force Academy has that reputation.

Democratic socialists can be Democrats. Many/most elected democratic socialists aren't DSA; Sanders and AOC aren't and I don't think Lander is either. The state level elected democratic socialists I've encountered have all been mistakably parts of their local Democratic Party organizations.

I think it's a mix of the "I'm not into politics" people, the "I hate both parties" people, and the "Damn right I'm an independent" people. I'd guess California style top two primaries would bring in some of these types.
