And still, a lot of people who have turned on him now were fine with that as long as gas prices were low. SO frustrating!

Here's today's column on the astonishing, ongoing mistreatment of people with #ME/CFS. Please spread it far and wide: the only thing which can break the media's wall of indifference is seeing an article about the issue go viral. Thank you. 1/2 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Abandoned, dismissed and gaslighted: there is no excuse for the way ME sufferers have been betrayed | George Monbiot
Changes in guidance and science seem to have little impact on millions of devastated lives. It’s a social crisis playing out behind closed doors, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

My kindest sympathies. Organizing a transatlantic move to be with my spouse was one of the hardest things I've done, and I didn't have to worry about my landing address. I hope you find a habitable place posthaste for your family.

And now, trying to get help is framed paradoxically as a lack of accepting personal responsibility. I think trying to get help and navigating complex bureaucracy to do so is actually taking life by the reins and doing something very hard!

There's such a prominent and pervasive belief in British culture at large that an individual's failure to thrive socially & economically is solely due to lack of effort, so when on a population level there's a huge gap they just blame it on laziness & push back hard on efforts to bridge the gap. </3

Today marks 25 years since 9/11. 8 months after the attack, psychiatrist Simon Wessely argued that illness reported around Ground Zero was being wrongly attributed to environmental toxins, suggesting “World Trade Centre Syndrome” was driven by social and psychological factors.

The worst thing that can happen in a white cis woman's life is being alarmed. That's why we kill/shuffle homeless people away, don't let mentally ill people participate in work or society, and need migrants to leave. A culture of catering to disgust. It's embarrassing to see it work politically.

I saw in your profile that you're audhd too and I have noticed hunger and satiety cues are busted for many of us. Yet another body signal I am not receiving properly! I sympathize greatly. After a bout of more activity than usual my body does the same--overcompensates.

Attention Ecologists! We are going to need *a lot* of ecologists. The First Lego League Teams need to speak with a scientist about their projects every year. Every year it's a different type of scientist. Last year was archaeologists. This year, ecologists! Sign up: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...
A fish is a teacher, wearing a button-up shirt with a collar. He says "Volunteer to speak with classrooms in front of a chalkboard that says "Skype a scientist needs YOU!". A snail on his desk says Help! And a shrimp says "Lego league is coming!" and a nervous seahorse says "this year's theme is ecosystems"

This article neatly demonstrates the way the phrase "build resilience" is used by those with power to perpetuate systemic abuse and absolve themselves of responsibility. Once you see it in one area, you can't stop seeing it everywhere else.

The far-reaching push against remote work in UK from industry to government seems to be reaching a fever pitch at the same time as the government's message of wanting disabled people to work more. It's bizarre! You must work, but you must be given zero accommodations for this. Eugenics I guess?

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

Take care of yourself! Sometimes it takes time with education. I really messed up when I was starting college, and after a couple years I learned better study habits & wound up going to graduate school. I am working on a PhD now (much older but still going!) You may be a "late bloomer" like me. :)

What a great article not only on faculty workloads, but how little our salaries actually factor in to most university budgets. A few highlights. First, our salaries are falling:
Third, faculty salaries are falling even if we statistically control for faculty rank and institution. By our analysis of National Center for Education Statistics data, tenured and tenure-track salaries are down 10 percent in real terms since 2016 and are lower today than they were in 2002; nontenured faculty salaries are down 4 percent since 2016 and are at 2002 levels today.

To put this plainly: Suppose sharply increased teaching loads enabled institutions to cut one out of every seven full-time faculty. (That’s roughly what we saw last year in severe cuts announced at West Virginia, Western Illinois, and St. Cloud State Universities.) The associated savings in salary and benefits even through such drastic action would amount to less than 2.5 percent of total institutional expenditures for the typical university.

The upshot? If you think higher education has a cost problem, squeezing more teaching out of faculty is not the first place you should look.
