“You dissect them then? That is rather industrious,” he said without the disgust I’d expected. He stilled for a moment before his long legs caught back up to jostle our shoulders. “And fortuitous! I raised a similar complaint to Herr Professor Weber last week. How are we meant to someday administer proper care when we’re applying compresses to pickled piglets? Of course the old quack did not listen. I mean, for God’s sake, he still lectures on the usefulness of miasma theory as if Koch didn’t disprove it with every publication.”

I huffed something dangerously close to a laugh, something so foreign to my body it came out as more of a cough. Henry perked up like a watered flower.

Borders are imaginary. It's impossible to own land. Money, without assigning it value, loses all meaning. I hope one day that we'll stop tolerating abuse of all living things for personal gain and profit. Gratitude and care for all that sustains us is vital. We deserve more than a hollow existence.

It all falls apart once you start asking questions, which is why I was asked to not come back to Catholic youth group. I got into an argument with a teacher who said animals don't have souls. I still maintain that animals DO have souls while some people clearly don't. 💅
