With all the July model runs now in, it is very likely that 2026 will see the largest El Niño event since records began in the late 1800s – and potentially by a truly mind-blowing margin. The median estimate is now 3.6C, roughly 0.8C hotter than the prior record (2.75C). www.theclimatebrink....

2. Electrify! The best way to tackle a fossil fuel crisis is to avoid using them altogether - via heat pumps, EVs and clean energy. One small silver lining of a rise in gas prices is that it tends to lower the electricity-gas price ratio (because wholesale costs make up more of the total gas bill)
Chart showing the GB electricity - gas price ratio. It fell from over 5 in 2021 to a low of 3.5 in late 2022, driven by high gas prices. It has since risen above 4 once again

Is gas still the reason GB energy prices are high? New Nesta blog by me. There's been a lot of talk about non-commodity costs on electricity bills, and how they're now dominating bill rises. My conclusion is: yes, they're a problem and need tackling; but they're not yet as big a problem as gas.

Despite rising non-commodity costs on energy bills, high gas prices remain the primary reason for expensive energy for most British households, making the switch to homegrown energy a top priority
