3 Body Problem’s opening is pretty striking and accurate IMO. As a non-specialist, I heard that the reality was way crueler than the show’s depiction…

Yeah and it’s so much like Hanzawa Naoki 😂 not just bc they have the same actor. The pacing is a bit weird in the middle but I like the ending scene of Mongolian landscape (hope this doesn’t count as spoilers!)

Yeah the opening scene was a bit incomprehensible, the ending scene is much better though! Heard mixed responses for this one so I'm just watching it out of curiosity (also to find something to watch when eating at home)

Finished the first episode of VIVANT -- dunno which is the main purpose of the show: expressing Japanese nationalism or promoting tourism to (a fictional) Mongolia?! Also, dunno if all the Japanese actors spoke in actual Mongolian bc if they did then it's really impressive!

For instance, when I'm watching the show I feel that the producers are really trying to critique Western white imperialism. Many reviews say this show is "anti-colonial." This is fair, but putting this message in the context of Edo Japan (albeit a fictional one) is...an interesting choice.

Yeah, and I agree that there is that difference between orientalizing oneself in Asia (I see this happening a lot in China too nowadays, they just haven't theorized it yet) and the way Asian Americans do it...all interesting questions though!

Lillian Tsay @lilliantsay.bsky.social · 29/11/2023
The interesting thing is that one producer is Japanese American and the director is Taiwanese American. They admitted that what they’re doing is writing their own experiences of racism and ideals of diversity to a fictional Edo Japan, so it’s probably more than just “Orientalism.”

I'm glad my guess was not wrong! The show portrayed the daimyo's daughter growing up in Kyoto so that drew my attention.

It's basically portraying Japan in 1657 as a country that had never seen guns, and one character even referred to the bakufu as an "empire"; a white character saying stuff that should be said in the 19th century, not the 17th century, but maybe I'm too critical for a fictional show!

Oh no my bad lol! As you said, there was slight chance in 1657. I'm happy with the modern echo chamber but a small space place in my heart wants to do some early modern stuff, although it's probably better to stay where I am...

😂 Sorry I should have asked with a clearer premise! But thanks to the misunderstanding (?) I'm learning lots of things I didn't know about the Edo period. Jeez, now I'm more than certain that I'll stay in my modern echo chamber...(speaking as if I have other choices lol)

, and he was born in a time of war, not the Edo period of course. I think I was more curious in what circumstances could a peasant's son rose to the status of a daimyo during the Edo period. Thanks again! I've learned a lot.

Lillian Tsay @lilliantsay.bsky.social · 27/11/2023
(I didn't state in the questions but the show was pretty specific that this was 1657) for a daimyo to have a father coming from a peasantry background. As an outsider in the field, I only know one case and that is Hideyoshi although he wasn't technically a peasant...

Hi thanks again for the explanation and the screenshot. My original intention to ask the question was not based on the assumption that daimyos must come from the lineages they claimed to be but whether there were means of social stratification in the Edo period

Lillian Tsay @lilliantsay.bsky.social · 27/11/2023
Wow, thank you for the detailed thread! I certainly knew none of these besides Hideyoshi. So are you suggesting that theoretically it is very possible that many daimyos came from all sorts of occupations (including peasantry), but we don't have much proof bc of the lack of documentation?
