What Happens When the West Steps Back in Africa?

International cooperation across Africa is changing rapidly. As Sweden and several Western donors scale back their presence, other actors are moving forward - including Russia, whose engagement on the continent has intensified.

In a podcast episode from the Expert Group For Aid Studies / EBA, SITE’s Maria Perrotta Berlin joins Anna Ida Rock from the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) to discuss Russia’s growing influence in Africa.

The discussion explores how Russia uses military, economic, and informational tools to strengthen its position, and what this means for democracy, institutions, and public trust in African countries.
