Here's Ep 2 of Experts in a Dying Field, in which @zunguzungu.bsky.social, @patrickiber.bsky.social and I gab about the 100 Best TV Shows list and how shows age (my favorite example is Gen Z viewers marveling at how nice Walter White's house is. "He has a pool?!") www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCPd...

ICYMI, I wrote about literal and metaphorical nitpicking. (also "Tangled," microscopy, a 17-year-old girl who died of peritonitis in 1943, parenting, Robert Hooke, corpse brides, poker, dolls and bad moms) It's been a complicated week somepersonalnews.substack.com/p/nitpicking

If you get lice, you have to wait 9 days before you can apply a second dose of the poison and find out whether any new ones have hatched. This is my record of that nine-day window. somepersonalnews.substack.com/p/nitpicking

We're still figuring this out. Someday the cinematography may rise above "blurry potato" But, podcasts being a new & underexplored genre, it seemed urgent to tackle the best adaptation of 2026--and it isn't close--Netflix's "Cien años de soledad" TAKE THAT, NOLAN www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLyj...

Two critics and a historian walk into a bar, drenched in obsolescence, to talk about pop culture, old internet drama and rabbitholes we've spent too much of our wild and precious lives burrowing down. Welcome to Experts in a Dying Field with me, @patrickiber.bsky.social and @zunguzungu.bsky.social

I wrote about whether Odysseus is a *dad* or a *father* — and why Christopher Nolan should just get a phone and not be such a turd about it. pjmaciak.substack.com/p/the-dadyssey

Burned out on the Kavanaugh circus, I figured a graveyard in Patagonia would be the emptiest place on Earth to wallow in "political grief"? "Is that a thing? IS THE POLITICAL PERSONAL?" I scribbled on the plane, like a weirdo. Then some stuff happened. somepersonalnews.substack.com/p/a-bare-ass...

I guess bureaucratic housekeeping always drifts toward the existential (today, while googling what to do re: a security retirement account so small it won't be permitted to continue existing as a "pension," I ran across a heated discussion of conversions vs. rollovers. it was poetry)

some are bad. some are good. none are short (this new brevity-loving internet is a conundrum) most are forgotten this goddamn file with 560 PDFs is my personal ozymandias

this spooked me being good for little else, and having developed an ear infection AS AN ADULT, I spent a few days compiling PDF copies of things I've published since 2016 the stuff I could access amounted to ~560 pieces I have several feelings about that the main one is: that is too many pieces

Getting laid off makes you grabby or perhaps clippy Last week a friend tried to read a piece I wrote years ago (may we all be blessed with such friends!) but found it paywalled. did I have a copy? I ... did not I don't have most of the things I've written oh no

if I'm being honest, another thing (or two) might also be launching soon and by "soon," I mean earlier than it probably should depending on whether paralysis or impulsivity wins out

Being laid off with hundreds of WaPo colleagues sure does make a person think I've thought, for instance, it sure is lucky no one in charge over there puts ideology over free speech
