I wouldn't go so far as to say Digger is a masterpiece, but I was surprised how much I loved it. It has enormous, glaring problems, but the film bakes its lack of subtext into the text in a way I couldn't help but admire. It also gains _something_ from being the final Warner Bros. film pre-Ellisons.

Just when I thought God of War (2018) had little more to give thematically, it just keeps going and grows beyond its simple “sad, bad dad reckons with his actions through parenthood” into “we cannot control our children, but only guide them to be the best they can be”.

Digger is a strange, interesting, funny enough satire, that works way more when Iñárritu hones in the devastating ironies of society’s difficulty with change, and art’s relationship to that irony, though it doesn’t hit that quite enough, making it feel a bit too miscalculated to truly soar.

Seeing this in D-Box is a really great way to highlight how much of this film is shockingly drama and character driven, as opposed to a menagerie of set pieces. Kind of still astounding, yet weighed down by the following 7 years, and particularly overshadowed by Doomsday in ways. Still great!

Credits roll on Wolverine. Despite a slow, simple start, the game really finds its footing, becoming a thrilling, violent, cool action adventure. It revels in its violence, all the while commenting on it in a really compelling new take on the Wolverine and X-Men corner of Marvel. I really dug this!
