My first fantasy city looked like a spreadsheet. Old cities grew house by house, so their streets twist and dead-end. So I wrote rules that grow a city the same way. Luna, Lightspire RPG, blockout. #GameDev #ProceduralGeneration

How tall should a dwarf be? Lightspire's races run from 135 to 208 cm, and the same swing on a dwarf reaches about 72% as far. One shared aim rule and per-race step distances keep it fair. Which race would you play? #GameDev #Fantasy

How many animations does one RPG character need? 6 kinds of attack × 29 weapon types = at least 174, and each has to fit bodies from 135 to 208 cm. Which is why I started filming myself. Lightspire RPG, work in progress. #GameDev #Animation

Mocap part 3: how do you test it without a suit? Film an animation you already know with a virtual camera, run it through the pipeline, compare every joint. Caught 3 bugs; final error about 5 cm. Lightspire RPG, work in progress. #GameDev #MotionCapture

Part 2: how two cheap cameras see in 3D. One camera guesses depth; two cameras triangulate, once a 28 cm bathroom scale tells each one where it is. Average error went from about 13 cm to about 5 cm. Lightspire RPG, work in progress. #GameDev #MotionCapture

Can a painting become a room? The Dwarven Hearth for Lightspire RPG, from a Lightspire: Cards illustration to grey boxes, stone, light (11 versions in about 18 hours) and props, ending with a character standing in it. Work in progress. #GameDev #Blender

Do you need a £2000 mocap suit? No. These dagger attacks were captured with my phone, my laptop webcam and my bathroom scales, which gave both cameras a known 28 cm square to calibrate against. Work in progress for Lightspire RPG. #GameDev #MotionCapture

The game itself handles filtering and sorting, a third party client is used for multiplayer security and server authority on legal moves, player ranking, matchmaking etc!

You only get a little more for a win, the essence is actually calculated with a base rate plus things like destroying enemy cards and playing a longer match give slightly more essence. If you find yourself struggling later on you can always go back and grind cards from decks you know you can beat
