Generally, being a philosopher means being the most annoying person in the room. I am that room.

Fun fact: no modern democratic country actually has. For the ancient Athenians, the hallmark of democracy wasn't the right to vote, but rather appointment by way of a lottery system. Appointment by popular vote was actually considered a hallmark of tyranny because votes could be bought.

Not saying you're wrong (I wouldn't know), but felt that was important to point out. Even within physics there are big expertise gaps. Someone working mainly astrophysics couldn't really explain in detail the work of a particle physicist, for example.

I have no dog in this fight, but while physicists would be the experts on quantum mechanics, they aren't experts on the capacities of quantum computers and only somewhat experts on how quantum computers work (mainly the physical principes they're based on).

As a Dutchman, this is pretty interesting. Most of us start learning English pretty early, but that mostly became the norm a bit later. Plus, most of us don't bother learning the pronunciation exactly enough to lose our accent, and even then what we learn in school tends to be British English.

Yeah that's also why 'Euthanasie' is a taboo word in Germany and they use 'Selbstmordhilfe' instead.

This is just a convoluted way of stating your conclusion. I'm sharing with you knowledge from experience with an actual perspective from within academia outside the US. If you don't wish to believe me, that's fine. It just shows to me that you don't critically examine your beliefs.

Internaltional students are "desperate" to attend universities in every western country. Also, students, certainly prospective students, have very little insight into the quality of their education as opposed to that of people elsewhere.

I've been involved in higher education in one way or another for over half my life (outside the US) and have never met anyone with particular admiration for the American system. This is just a myth spawning from US exceptionalism.

It's proven a bit paradoxical to try to develop a standard for a field part of which is the subversion of standards. Even what exists now is mostly upheld through convention (and that's ignoring the big schism in western philosophy about these standards). The theoretical basis was rejected ages ago.

The history of philosophy is riddled with people claiming they've figured out a/the methodological foundation for philosophy, only for the next guy to make an equally sound argument for the opposite (sometimes—if they're really good—even on the basis of the previously advocated foundation).

Absolutely true, but that distinction gets a lot muddier for us. Part of the problem is that there's never been any agreement on any standard that converges to, well, agreement. When two philosophers disagree, they don't just disagree on the what, but also the how, because the how is the what.

Academic publishing is in a weird place. Peer review is all about holding each other to academic standards in our respective fields. I work in philosophy. Have two philosophers write something on academic standards and they will disagree, even when they BOTH meet each other's standards!

The weirdest thing about Hank Green's apology for using AI is that he spends much of it asserting his "nuanced takes" on AI while in the same breath admitting to having essentially an addiction to LLMs. It's like listening to a smoker asserting their "nuanced takes" on the dangers of smoking.

there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.

It's originally separate: den Bleyker, "den" being an (archaic) article. Fusing the two words lead to the "d" getting capitalized. Similar case for names starting with "Van-": "van" is Dutch for "of."
