We explored Carl Schurz Park in Manhattan, one of the first freeway lids in the world. And then discovered a variety of other structures built over the same freeway, including residential and commercial towers. What do we think, chat? Are these all lids?

Besides our near catastrophic collision with a load of Lime batteries, we were fascinated to see hundreds of Paramount Theater visitors lined up over I-5 and being exposed to freeway noise and fumes. Seems like a lid park here could solve that and be a good place to hang out before a show.

Still, it's better than what was there before, and it's a fine design considering that the project is in Seattle's highest income neighborhood and next to just a few million+ dollar homes. We'll do better Downtown where thousands of people with a mix of incomes in dense housing need more open space.

We braved wind and rain with the community to check out the new Montlake Lid and walk/bike bridge. The project is a great addition to the non-motorized and transit networks but still feels like a very suburban environment with leftover landscaping and a lot of concrete and asphalt.

The University and Spring Street on-ramps to I-5 are longer than they look. 5th Avenue backs up every day for half a mile, delaying transit and essential freight, because of this freeway being in the middle of our growing Downtown. Can't we do better?

Fireman's Park in Tacoma over I-705 opened the same year as Freeway Park in Seattle, in 1976. It's an example of a partial, open-sided lid which navigates tricky topography while still providing green space for central Tacoma.
