Multiple lynchings in 1905 and 1906 were linked to the play by the press!! The Washington Post called it "as false as 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' and a hundred times more wicked"!!! People knew the tale was racist, Griffith knew it was racist, and he decided to make the movie anyway.

Cannot stress enough how INSANE it is that D. W. Griffith decided to adapt The Clansman like you can twist it however you want but it was a deeply racist and irresponsible choice.

Also the day he signed with WB for a feature film and celebrated his first wedding anniversary, he's recorded as having said "This is the best day of my life" before dying of a heart attack at age 46. Just devastating

Yesterday, I looked into Roscoe Arbuckle and his murder trial and it's so insanely tragic to me that a lot of his movies might have survived if it hadn't been for All That

June 19: Late Bloomers (1996) - A basketball coach/maths teacher and a married secretary fall in love. Film about sexuality, small town rumors and acceptance. Amazing performances, precious moments, all in all tho. Didn't love it. 3 ⭐

June 18: Imagine Me & You (2005) - lesbian Romcom that has aged, also because they included a pick up artist adjacent character and focus soooo much on straight ppl. The lesbian romance is so cute tho so. 3 ⭐

June 15: El Corral (2017) - Argentinian Leopold and Loeb inspired coming of age film. Could have gone a little further than it did. 3 1/2 ⭐

Not a queer movie by all definitions but a queer movie by mine: Crybaby - John Waters' Grease. 5 ⭐

June 8th: Sleepaway Camp - Slasher with queer text and subtext; it's divisive and I can see why. Still, despite some unfortunately aged elements, I think this one is a gem (though I get why ppl, especially trans women, might disagree) 3 ⭐

June 7th: Eating Miss Campbell - Meta low budget horror comedy which should be right up my alley but wasn't. I'd classify this as try-hard. Had some standout moments and a few iconic lines inbetween but cannot rly recommend it. 1 1/2 ⭐

June 7th: Ich möchte kein Mann sein - An early Lubitsch with queer subtext (though you can read it as queer text). It was alright and fun enough, though like many silent comedies that aren't physical it hasn't aged great

Saying Eli Roth is one of your favorite directors is like saying Quentin Tarantino is one of your favourite directors but worse.

Ppl on Twitter are making top 10 lists of their favourite directors and I'd love to participate but unfortunately my list would include a guy who sucks so bad on multiple levels

And like nobody is denying that there are some great movies from the 50s. But the average 50s cash grab is often worse than the average 30s cash grab in multiple ways

Some of us just got obsessed with a random old Hollywood actor and realized that the conservatism of the 1950s is also very evident in 50s cinema, specifically when it comes to roles for women and sexual politics.

☁🦋 @liblikasling.bsky.social · 15/05/2026
There's 50s cinema discourse on film twitter and I think the most INSULTING part of it is that a bunch of ppl are assuming any 50s hater must be a Tarantino head.

Brought to you by Operation Petticoat, unfortunately the only joint movie Tony Curtis and Cary Grant ever did
000
☁🦋 @liblikasling.bsky.social · 11/05/2026
Several later Cary Grant movies have a "who is HE!" scene where some character is in awe of the majesty of Cary Grant and has Cary's story explained to him, it's delightful

They could have put disabled actors on that stage and chose not to, instead erasing disability (almost) entirely and once again sticking a fake beard on a woman. It's disgraceful. The disabled people who were exploited by P. T. Barnum deserve better. Disabled ppl today deserve better.

Some of the issues with The Greatest Showman are presumably going to be fixed before they transfer it to London - who knows, maybe they'll even dial down the racism and actually acknowledge that racism exist in the show. But there's no getting away from the fact that they squandered a chance

Also WHY did they basically make Anne Wheeler a Jezebel caricature in act 1 and then refuse to acknowledge racism exists like hello.

☁🦋 @liblikasling.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
There's stuff that's bad in there (mostly bland new songs, uninspired staging, repetitive choreographies, pacing issues... I could go on) but there are also aspects that are downright OFFENSIVE such as erasing disability from the narrative

One of the last times I talked to him, my dad said with complete sincerity: "Did you know that Angela Merkel is Hitler's granddaughter?" He believes Michelle Obama is a trans woman. He believes the "gay agenda" is pushed on poc as ethnic cleansing.
