Cannot stress enough how INSANE it is that D. W. Griffith decided to adapt The Clansman like you can twist it however you want but it was a deeply racist and irresponsible choice.

There's 50s cinema discourse on film twitter and I think the most INSULTING part of it is that a bunch of ppl are assuming any 50s hater must be a Tarantino head.

Several later Cary Grant movies have a "who is HE!" scene where some character is in awe of the majesty of Cary Grant and has Cary's story explained to him, it's delightful

Some of the issues with The Greatest Showman are presumably going to be fixed before they transfer it to London - who knows, maybe they'll even dial down the racism and actually acknowledge that racism exist in the show. But there's no getting away from the fact that they squandered a chance

The problem with getting more into silent films is that you become painfully aware of the magnitude of early 20th century culture we have lost because films wasn't considered something to preserve.

fun language fact of the day: the guy who first commited the phrase "sugar daddy" to paper in the english language also wrote ww1 poetry

The City of Fear

THis was a city once: women lived here;
Their voices were low to their lovers, o'nights by teh murmuring waters;
Their hands were busied with home--mosters and daughters,
Sisters and wives:
Now the shell dives
To scatter anew the shattered remains of the homes that their hands made dear;
Fear
Walks naked at noonday's clear
Where the shopman proffered his wares to the loitering street,
Where the Mass was read.
Above,
The war-birds bear
And whistle: and love
And laughter and work and the hum of the city are utterly dead.

so interesting how so much 2010s queer cinema is about yearning and repressed desires, both in a coming of age context and in an adult context - in the 2000s, you had a lot more inconsequential queer comedies
