The pain at knowing that Sheffield isn't included even in the most wild pipedream plans.

Hi @darrenpjones.bsky.social, slightly concerning that your advice to business is to not "prepare for a hypothetical". Especially given your role in the Cabinet Office, the ministerial department that literally writes the UK's National Risk Register!

To see a literal government minister take the attitude of crabs in a bucket is kinda disgusting. Almost gives a sense that he doesn't want to get his issue sorted because attacking the privileged Lib Dems is too enticing.

Labour might be calling it a budget for working people, but how can it be when the organisations they work for are being hammered! This city deserves better, it deserves a party that understands business is crucial to growth. It deserves the Lib Dems.

Reported the broken ticket machine (the only one) on Platform 1 at Chapeltown Station. Let's hope Northern don't penalise those for traveling without a ticket.

Thanks to the slightly irritating limit of 60 second videos on here I am having to link to my Facebook page to publish my speeches at Lib Dem Conference in Bournemouth. The first is about how Hong Kongers should have the right to pass on their language freely and without fear. fb.watch/CjAnmF2VEe/

Honoured to meet with visiting members of the Japanese Diet, Mssrs Edano, Funada and Koichi. We discussed the opportunity to strengthen Japan-UK relations at a time when our liberal democracies feel under threat. We also shared our experience of the role of parliament in scrutinising government.

The fundamental is that things become a lot more simple, equitable and efficient if things are done as part of a standard process. Understanding how each kids learns and the support they need should be part of the education system.

I have written to Nigel Farage in response to his visit to my constituency of Bicester and Woodstock today.
Dear Mr Farage

Welcome to Oxfordshire. You came here to talk about “mass deportations” but made no effort to understand the people or challenges of this community.

Your proposals offer no costed plan. Daily flights, new detention centres and vast surveillance systems would cost billions. Empty slogans are not a substitute for serious policy.

It did not go unnoticed that you spoke just minutes from Campsfield House, where a detention centre is being rebuilt despite local opposition and past scandals. Yet you chose not to meet residents living with those consequences.

You often invoke Winston Churchill, born here in Oxfordshire. He spent his career grappling with difficult truths and forging alliances in our national interest. Instead of sowing division, we should build on that legacy.

Our immigration system is broken after years of Government failure. It needs urgent, practical reform: fair, managed migration to meet workforce shortages, a faster asylum system and support for those fleeing war and persecution. That requires cooperation and honesty, not division.

If you return, I would be glad to show you Oxfordshire’s real story: businesses thriving thanks to home and overseas talent, health and care services desperate for staff and residents supporting refugees with compassion. You would see a community interested in solving problems, not fuelling conflict.

Yours sincerely

Calum Miller MP

Statehood is not conditional upon the actions of other states. Palestine is either a state or it isn't, it shouldn't be dependent on the whims of an untrustworthy government lead by Netanyahu. Disgraceful that Starmer uses it as a bargaining chip.

The Liberal Democrats welcome this first step but urge Keir Starmer to go further and recognise Palestine immediately. Far greater action is also needed to address the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, including fully ceasing arms sales and imposing sanctions on the Israeli cabinet.
Statement from Ed Davey:

Recognition of the state of Palestine should not be used as a bargaining chip. It should have happened months ago.

We also need far greater action to stop the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, including fully ceasing arms sales and implementing sanctions against the Israeli cabinet.

"Democracy Dies in Darkness" Politicians and journalists have a tense relationship but we shouldn't relish when journalism suffers. In the world of AI and disinformation the need to have someone able to investigate and find the truth is important. This is shortsighted and deeply worrying.

Here is the fiscal document from the 2024 Manifesto. It could also be an idea to borrow to fund it, given that improved skills and knowledge leads to better productivity and growth. This increases the tax base counteracting the borrowing costs. It's called Keynesian Economics

A Lifelong Skills Grant has featured in both the 2019 and 2024 Lib Dem manifesto. The money is there, it is political decision stopping it. I understand the "black hole" argument but we are tying the hands of our economic future by being too austere with things that have a straight line to growth.

One would hope so, but for some companies co-funding might be the only way to justify the spend on Level 7 Apprenticeships. I know of one person who is under no illusion that their company wouldn't have offered a Level 7 apprenticeship had there not been the financial support.

I was suspicious when Labour made zero mention of lifelong learning in their manifesto. It has now been confirmed that they don't care. In a changing world there is increasing need to upskill and reskill in the workplace, which is now a lot harder thanks to Labour.

I am not going to pretend that the mess the Tories left didn't exist. Labour had a fair job of clearing it up. Labour's approach since then has been chaotic, confused and incoherent. I wished that they would do better, but alas they failed at that.

This is what you get when an ideological void with no political backbone becomes Prime Minister, a speech that would have sounded harsh coming from a Tory happening purely because they are terrified of local elections results.

Are Lib Dems slightly more resistant because there is rarely such a thing as a "safe seat" or the effort needed to make it so has been institutionalised in the local activists?

Church roofism. Spoke to a person on polling day in Hull last week. Her number one issue was "small boats", was indifferent on Farage but was voting Lib Dem because the local councillors made sure the park was a nice place. Is it just that voters are asking "Is my councillor value for money?"

Deeply stupid. It isn't perfect but NATO's Article 5 has kept Europe safe for decades. Trump's election should mean that we step up to the plate, not throw in the towel. If this is the future of the Green Party then I am glad I am a Lib Dem.
