$1,675,245 That’s the combined total for all 18 grant proposals that I submitted for work today. All regarding invasive insects in one way or another. I’ve been running on empty for weeks and I finally feel like I can breathe. Fingers crossed that we get funding for as many as possible!

I swear, 50% of my job is deciphering acronyms. Insect and plant names, our program acronyms, state agency acronyms, federal agency acronyms, industry partner acronyms, and so many more… My new manager can’t even remotely keep up. I’ve had 6 years to learn…she’s only had 4 months. Poor thing.

That said, the position for Oregon IS a really cool job for someone who is interested in protecting the state from invasive insects. You would be designing and using trapping survey methods instead of going straight to insecticides/pesticides.

5 years ago I would have felt obligated to go to a friend’s whiskey tasting party because my wife wanted to go…I would have gotten trashed, even thought I didn’t want to go. Today, I stayed home (without feeling pressured) and my partner went without me. I feel liberated, and very content. :)

I designed these wooden coins for all 22 members of my field staff team at work. Each token has the program name, the date, and the staff member’s name on the back. They turned out perfectly and everyone loved their small little trinket to celebrate a great trapping season 🪲

My field staff picnic was a huge success! After their surprise awards ceremony (hand designed & personalized be me), one of my coordinators recognized ME with a very sweet speech. Everyone literally cheered for me! It was so unexpected and I nearly cried! 🥹 I’m full of happy warm fuzzy feelings!

The saddest part is that, by extension, my 17 year old kid was also not invited. I don’t even know how to explain that the reason they never got to say goodbye was because I’m my family’s black sheep, the “bad kid”. They kicked me out when I was 18, but told everyone I “ran away”.

I’m sad today. I didn’t go to my grandmother’s funeral months ago. I’m estranged from my family, and when I asked if I could attend, I never got a reply. They never even told me when or where it was. Despite this, they will forever resent me for not going, for not “caring enough”. 🧵
