Homeworld: Unbound on SideQuest Oculus Quest Games & Apps including AppLab Games ( Oculus App Lab )
Homeworld came out in 1999 and put its battles in open space rather than on a map. This is that game running natively on Quest, in stereo, with the fleet in full virtual reality, around you. Point a controller at a fighter and it lights up. Pull the trigger to select it, or sweep the beam across a group to take all of them at once. Hold the order button and the destination hangs in the air wherever you put it, at any height you like, which is what a game set in open space always wanted and never got on a monitor. Sweep while you order and the ships fly the path you drew. You can shrink the whole engagement down to a tabletop and read it at a glance, or push it out until the capital ships are bigger than you are and you have to look up to watch one go past. Build, research and fleet management sit on one wrist and your objectives on the other, and a command wheel under your thumb covers the rest, so you are not digging through menus in the middle of a fight. The demo campaign is inside the app and unpacks itself the first time you run it, so there is nothing to download or copy. If you already own Homeworld, put homeworld.big, HW_Music.wxd and HW_Comp.vce in your Downloads folder and turn on All files access when the app asks for it; the next launch is the full sixteen missions. It reads them where they sit, so nothing gets copied and no PC is involved. The Remastered Collection on Steam includes the files this needs. Multiplayer runs on a local network, headset to headset or headset to PC, and there is a keyboard in the headset so you never take it off to type. Internet play works too, and only the host has to set up a port. Two players has been tested; three or more has not. An unaffiliated fan project built on the source Relic released in 2003. No commercial game data is included the demo it ships with is Relic's freely redistributable copy.
