Ward 1 City Council Updates - October 2, 2026

The City Council just passed this resolution asking the Hennepin County Sheriff and University of Minnesota to take down all of their flock cameras. Seems like a no-brainer issue that would be a unanimous vote right? Council Members Rainville, Vetaw, Shaffer, and Palmisano voted no.
Calling on Hennepin County and the University of Minnesota to terminate the use of Flock Safety cameras used as license plate reader cameras.
Whereas, the City of Minneapolis government does not own or operate Flock Safety cameras, but residents of the city have called on their elected leaders to take any and all actions to stop the proliferation of Flock Safety cameras and ban their usage; and
Whereas, the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) and the University of Minnesota have deployed Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) cameras throughout Hennepin County and the city of Minneapolis; and
Whereas, a Star Tribune investigation in July reported that federal immigration enforcement agencies, such as ICE, had the means to access Flock Safety data, despite Minnesota law mandating that ALPR data only be shared for criminal investigations; and
Whereas, Flock Safety ALPR technology captures and retains detailed data on the movements of every vehicle that passes each camera, regardless of whether the vehicle's occupants are suspected of any crime, creating a comprehensive surveillance record of residents' daily movements; and
Whereas, communities across Minnesota including Duluth, Isanti County, Sherburne County, West St.
Paul, Saint Paul, Columbia Heights, Brooklyn Park, and Shorewood -have ended or paused their use of Flock Safety technology in recent months, citing cost, erosion of public trust, and concerns over how the data is accessed and shared; and
Whereas, for months, residents throughout the city of Minneapolis have been organizing against Flock Safety in their neighborhoods, and some have been successful in their efforts to remove Flock Safety cameras from their local streets; and
Whereas, the City of Minneapolis government does not own or operate Flock Safety cameras, but residents of the city have called on their elected leaders to take any and all actions to stop the proliferation of Flock Safety cameras and ban their usage;

Olivia miles needing to be benched is killer. Understandable for a rookie, but not for a MVP candidate. She still has a half left to change some BS narratives that will inevitably get created to try and take away her historically great season if they get swept here

For as much as the Lynx were absolutely cheated 2 years ago VS the liberty, it’s the liberty who have demonstrated championship DNA and the Lynx who have cowered all series. Liberty have been more physical, hustled more, and have had way better game-plans to stifle the Lynx on both ends.

It’s a gift that people are wanting to choose MPS during an enrollment crisis. Don’t make them wait! The article cites an example of a family choosing a charter partly because they were on a waitlist from March through August. More failures of leadership from MPS and oversight from the school board

This article lays out so many self-inflicted wounds from MPS again. If this backlog isn’t cleared by 10/1 it’s more money left on the table. Clean up all the issues of mismanagement within the Davis Center before hugely consequential plans that close schools. sahanjournal.com/education/mi...

Vote yes! Passing the MN constitutional amendment on this year’s ballot will increase funding to all public schools including about $1,000,000 per year to Minneapolis Public Schools. Don’t skip it - leaving this question blank is the same as voting no. (PS - Edison scored!)

Frey doesn’t want the parks levy fully funded so is happy from last night as reflected in his vote prevailing. There was a vote to finalize the full parks and city levy last night that would’ve given the parks their needed funding. Yes: Payne, Chughtai, Olsen No: Frey, Brandt, Harris Bernstein

Tonight at our Board of Estimate & Taxation meeting we deadlocked on deciding the maximum levy for the City and the Parks. I voted in full support of the park board’s levy request and the city’s request throughout every single amendment brought forward, but we could not find consensus on that.

I just got done speaking to 500 minneapolis families from across the city on why I support delaying the MPS closure plan. After COVID, the CDD, and Operation Metro Surge our students need stability. This plan is rushed & still leaves many questions about the district’s financial future unanswered.

A BET cut to the city levy makes it harder for Council to restore the Mayor's cuts to climate action, violence prevention, housing inspections, health, and BIPOC & immigrant programs. He made those cuts rather than stop MPD overspending. Parks need BET support and so does City Council.

The city council have been calling it out and trying to get them to present and answer questions but they refuse. We got no heads up of MPD’s overspending and the Mayor has been stopping them from presenting to us on their financial mismanagement. kstp.com/tracking-you...

20 years ago we closed a bunch of schools. In Ward 1 specifically Putnam, Holland, and Tuttle come to mind. Now we have charters schools either in the exact buildings of all those schools or mere blocks from where they were. Just look to recent history to see how school closures don’t work

We are just coming off of COVID, the murder of George Floyd, a complete school district redesign, and now operation metro surge. MPS needs stability and increased investment, not school closures.

A rushed and reckless plan to close 17 schools is the last thing our district needs right now. Our children are our everything, and they deserve a district that takes its time, engages with families, and builds a plan actually rooted in the needs of our community: not this.

Every year at the Waite Park Fall Festival I table with a budget activity where people can vote on what I should prioritize for the budget. Each person gets 3 beads they can put in any of the jars as they see fit (all 3 in 1 jar, 1 in 3 different jars, etc.). Here are the results we got on Saturday.
Waite park fall festival
Invest in social housing 103
Reverse cuts to climate action 69
Reverse cuts to neighborhood funding 58
Reverse cuts to unarmed public safety 53
Lower property taxes 42

9/11 represents America perfectly. Use the tragedy to go to war, erode civil liberties & expand the surveillance state with the patriot act while simultaneously denying healthcare to those impacted which has now caused more people to die from 9/11 related illnesses than who died 25 years ago today.

Today’s shooting comes less than a month after the tragic Hopkins murder/suicide, another act of intimate partner violence. Hopefully this concerning twin cities trend won’t continue to be glossed over, even though the coverage I’ve watched so far seems to be very fixated on classic cRiMe tropes.
