This summer, I joined @studentsonice for the 2026 SOI Arctic Expedition. Behind the lens, I cherished the opportunity to try to create images that encapsulate the shared optimism and passion of the experience. Grateful.

This morning, the Bay of Fundy and I greeted eachother with a smile. A partial solar sunrise eclipse painted bold colours across the horizon, decorated with the silhouette of a ring-billed gull flying over head.

Illuminated by the glow of car headlights, this Snowy Owl perched along a rural roadside is a reminder of our shared responsibility for wildlife of the far North. Unfortunately, roads and vehicle collisions remain one of the leading causes of death for these Arctic wanderers.

The magic in the mud: sandpipers’ migration superfood
An invisible fuel draws thousands of tiny migrating shorebirds to the Roberts Bank Mudflats each year. Now, we’re in danger of losing it forever.

Hundreds of NOAA employees are being fired by Trump and DOGE. The National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, provides life saving weather forecasting in the US. A study found that for every $1 invested in NWS, it produces $73 in value to Americans. Again, this isn't about efficiency.

“As scientists, we owe it to the world to do a better job communicating the wonders of science, and the incredible discoveries being made by our field, to everyone around us” As a young(ish) professor, I feel this deeply. What are we doing this for, if we aren’t sharing? 🧪🌎

I hope that we can create a society where people are able to spend more time grounded in natural places where they are able to engage with and ponder things like old trees and wild owls. Photo from the archives, December 28th, 2014. Canon T3, Ottawa, ON

Again, Canadian Endangered Species law is flaunted by the Canadian gov't. It arbitrarily set a cap of 60 assessments to support in 2023-24, failed to meet that target. Canada not respecting its own laws or its international commitments www.oag-bvg.gc.ca/internet/Eng...

The common loon - a sentinel of our watersheds. Sensitive to environmental contamination, their presence on oceans in the winter and on lakes in the summer can be a reflection of healthy ecosystems.
