Across the Metroland papers today, Brad writes about the silent crisis in housing: accessibility for disabled renters. And, friends, Bill 60's speeding up of evictions and limits on those owing arrears will only make things worse. Link in bio or tr.ee/b-M2MEhM8O
Alt: a blue background with yellow and white text, highlighting issues related to accessible rental housing. In the top left, bold yellow text reads, "Bill 60 Makes the Silent Crisis of Accessible Rental Housing Even Worse." There is a logo to the right, featuring "DJNO" in yellow and "in metroland" in white, accompanied by a stylized sun graphic. Below, there is a dark translucent box containing text: "Disabled tenants have to weigh their options every day they leave their home. They wonder, “Will I be able to get to my medical appointment if the elevator in my building goes down?” Elevator failure and lack of repair regularly trap older adults and tenants with disabilities at home, from Toronto to Sudbury, for weeks at a time..." read the full article for the rest of the quote, too long for alt. text in these apps!

It’s *not* immigrants. It’s *not* lack of supply. It’s $$$ firms that are making housing unaffordable. “Census data shows that the supply of housing has been greater than population growth almost every year since 2010, yet housing price increases consistently outstrip inflation every year.”

Plan = give the industry more money by starving Cities for revenue from one of the richest groups in Canada (property developers). Savings = $0. Thats because housing prices aren't a function of cost, they're a function of what the market will bare. 1/2

The ON Libs said their plan would be to “phase in” rent control, similar to how Manitoba does it. But that could mean a new building (like the 2 in our community) still wouldn’t have any rent control for *many years.* FWIW, here’s what “phased-in” looks like in MB: www.gov.mb.ca/cca/rtb/reso...
A screenshot of rent control policy in Manitoba that reads:

Do rent increase rules apply to everyone who rents?
The rules apply to most rental units, such as a house, part of a duplex, or a suite in a house or apartment building.
However, the annual rent increase guideline does not apply to the following units:
• newer rental units; if a residential complex was built and occupied after April 9, 2001, the units are exempt for 15 years; if a residential complex was built and occupied after March 7, 2005, the units are exempt for 20 years
• units renting for more than a certain amount; this amount may change every year; check the Branch's website@ www.manitoba.ca/rtb for up-to-date information or contact the Branch
• units managed by, or for, the Government of Canada, Government of Manitoba or a municipality
• caretaker/employee units
• life lease complexes that are run on a non-profit basis
Even though the guideline doesn't apply, the landlord is still required to give three months' written notice of a rent increase.

Doug Ford failed us. He took away rent control for buildings like ours that were built after 2018, and he didn’t get affordable housing built. He’s counting on renters to continue footing the bill for overpriced tiny “luxury” apartments while also padding rich corporate execs’ wallets. SHAME.

It’s true — together with @bhutilakarpoche.bsky.social, we sent a letter to the Competition Bureau last year asking them to investigate. We should be *very critical* about anyone running for leadership who has ties (like Carney’s) to corporations that prioritize profits over people.
