11/2024 update: working on it but I'm still not sure I'm really here yet because I can only take so much social media checking and I'm lazy. Still easier to find me on Mastodon at the moment: @LhasaCM@thepit.social

At least the "what's your favorite EO?" question should be gone by now...

For any and all federal jobs. Officially it is to be treated like a cover letter or the like - not officially scored or rated (so shouldn't impact whether you make the cert) but provides additional information for the hiring manager (and is part of the package the executive approves at selection).

I like that logic. Extending it: Garth Brooks fans are old people from the suburbs less likely to ride public transit or stay up that late past their bedtimes?

They did the same for Garth Brooks. Baffling that these select concerts are more disruptive to traffic than a regular sold-out game or anything else. (I guess the ~2,000 extra attendees makes that much of a difference?)

I joked about needing the GPS beeps to guide me on something like the 50 States ride, but in reality having the route map more than suffices. But I've always liked maps and still seem to have a decent sense of direction.

Yeah - while sometimes that's a cable issue, that's more likely the device maker being cheap and leaving out a few resistors. Wouldn't be surprised to see that more and more as everyone tries to shave costs within the broader context (at least until the bubble bursts).

It is amazing how many different types of USB-C cables there are. (I think that behavior is a protocol issue that the A to C cable skips) Standard, my ass.

Wearing my usual hi-vis vest, I almost got flattened tonight by a guy driving a pickup truck leaving the gas station at 17th/Bladensburg/Mt. Olivet. When he realized how close he got to ending me, he yelled "sorry, I didn't see you." Obviously, since he never once looked in my direction.

Yeah - the northbound side is basically blocked so the fast-traffic coming up the hill will be barreling head-on into the southbound traffic "on their side." And especially under the bridge the visibility of the canopy posts is not the greatest.

It wouldn't be a dreary Sunday without Dew Drop making the MBT hazardous and illegally occupying public space. #bikeDC

Neat idea from @waba.org and Lime, but I feel like 12:20pm is way too early of a cut off.
From the WABA 50 States email that just went out...

How it works: Between mile 43.4 (MacArthur Blvd) and 43.9 (Loughboro Rd NW) on Arizona Ave., Lime will offer free e-bike rides and shuttle your steed to the top of the hill! There will be shuttles every 20 minutes starting from 10:20 am. They will run 7 times on this schedule: 10:20am, 10:40am, 11am, 11:20am, 11:40am, 12pm, 12:20pm.

True, though 295 has the added challenge of those pesky train tracks.

To add to the list of disappointing @washingtonsun.bsky.social takes on things: easy to show up for votes when you're not in session most of the time, so spinning this is as good attendance (let alone "impressive") is just farcical. Not as farcical as their occupation spin, but still.
Text reads:

Surprise! Congress did something functional. Attendance has been impressive in both chambers, with members being present for about 97% of the votes this Congress, The Washington Sun’s data cruncher Andrew Van Dam shows us today with charts made from data assembled by Voteview. If these numbers hold — likely but not guaranteed, as attendance often falls during the holidays — it’ll be the second-best record ever, behind only the COVID proxy vote-assisted 2021-2022 cycle.

Extra fun when the Safe Accommodation violation is at a school.
Outside CHML parking spaces and the contraflow bike lane are blocked off for storage and port-a-potties. Instead of using the parking spaces on the other side of the street to allow for cyclists to traverse the block without having to face oncoming traffic head-on.

And if not, definitely did a lot to popularize it amongst this audience. Or maybe it's like calculus and he's one of several who came up with it independently. (I saw a Reddit post claiming it came about in 2020 and blames journalists and marketing, but I'm pretty sure his usage predates that.)

I wouldn't say "always" (says someone still grumbling that she used an SUV and skipped the easy W of riding a CaBi 100 feet for the MBT Fort Totten groundbreaking), but I do think she's genuinely seen biking as a fun *recreational* activity. The closed streets of DCBR is right up her alley.

Sure, some of the best magicians could pull that off. But not sustainably. And while I've never met a bike shop owner who got into the business hoping to get rich, they need to at least be able to survive.

Chris @lhasacm.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
Many bike shop mechanics are magicians, but working on some of these Amazon specials is like asking them to pull a rabbit out of a hat while taking away the hat and tying one arm behind their back.

A cousin of this mindset is why I'm always the one to take my wife's bike in for service. Her bike was purchased there, but she (like far too many people) seems perpetually shocked that good service takes time (and therefore costs money), even when it's less than I think it should be.

I found it helpful when I was pulling M around as a way to get a screenshot of something to submit to 311 without having to stop and take a picture. Riding solo, and with built-in lights, that's not an issue so no reason to bother.

Also a bit awkward if there's still construction on Malcom X. I'll also say - the comment/note about "May be worth just keeping people on Arizona here since there's a bike lane." *really* stings given the surprise change last summer.

Chris @lhasacm.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
In what loaded for me, it looks like they're skipping the MLK climb for the Malcom X climb up from 295. I'm also very puzzled by the double Texas treatment. Very "same but different" vibes overall - driven by the pit stop locations, I imagine.

I imagine that's a school parking lane on a lot of days. Also, looks like the middle school got their parking lot solar panels back in 2018!

Just...what a waste.
Satellite image of Suzanne Middle School in Walnut, CA, showing two small parking lots on the corners with solar panels covering them, and tons of building space with gray concrete(?) roofs begging for solar arrays.

Did you scroll north on Google Maps? They pulled the same stunt on the middle school across the street from the tennis courts. The ratio is even more ridiculous - so much roof space they could cover with panels...
